PremiumTamil Nadu Chennai Rains LIVE Updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in seven Tamil Nadu districts including Chennai, Vellore and Ranipet. A yellow alert has been issued in parts of the state on Thursday, October 17.
A depression over Bay of Bengal is likely to cross North Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of October 17, the India Meteorological Department said in its latest update.
In the wake of this storm, isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely to lash parts of Tamil Nadu, South Andhra Pradesh and very heavy rainfall over Kerala & South Interior Karnataka today, October 16, the weather department said.
Areas on IMD alert: The IMD said that on October 16, "heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two places is likely to occur over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Chennai districts."
What triggered Tamil Nadu and Chennai rain? The IMD said heavy rainfall may hit Tamil Nadu due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. Waterlogging was reported in several parts of the state, including Chennai. Visuals showed people wading through knee-deep waters in Chennai as several parts of the city reeled under a flood due to rainfall. Streets and roads were flooded with muddy water following heavy rainfall.
Train, flight, bus services disrupted: Bus services were affected in several areas. Meanwhile, Southern Railway announced cancellation of four express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express, due to waterlogging. Several domestic flights were cancelled as sufficient number of passengers did not turn up to avail services.

Chennai Rains LIVE: The Regional Meteorological Centre in its latest press release said, "The Depression over westecentral and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal moved west- northwestwards with a speed of 14 kmph during past 6 hours and crossed north Tamil Nadu - South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to north of Chennai, near latitude 13.5°N and longitude 80.2°E around 0430 hrs IST of today, the 17th October 2024.
The weather bulletin dated October 17 noted the possibility of the depression weakening into a low pressure area during next 12 hours.

Chennai Rains Live: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday sounded an "orange alert" in two districts in Kerala, predicting very heavy rainfall in isolated places there. While northern Malappuram and Kannur were placed under an orange alert, 10 other districts, including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kasaragod, were given a yellow alert predicting heavy rainfall, according to the IMD.

Chennai Rains Live: Balachandran, Director of Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre said, "Yesterday’s Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and lay centered at 0830 IST of today, over the same region, about 320 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 350 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 400 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh). It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu - South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of 17th October."
Chennai Rains Live: "Since yesterday night, the rain has stopped. Overnight, we have drained water out from the majority part of the city. Right now, there is water stagnation in some locations... Water is draining out slowly," said Chennai Mayor R Priya.

Chennai Rains Live: The IMD said, "The depression over southwest and adjoining westecentral Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 1130 hours IST of today, the 16th October 2024 over the same region near latitude 12.5° N and longitude 82.7° E, about 280 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 320 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 370 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh)."
"It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu - South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of 17th October," the IMD added.
Chennai Rains Live: In response to the anticipated Cyclone alert for October 15th, 16th and 17th in Chennai by Indian Meteorological Department, Chennai Metro Rail Services will be operated with increased frequency of services to support Chennai public at times of heavy rain.
First train departs at 05:00 hrs from all terminal and last train depaarts at 23:00 hrs from all terminals. While between 08:00hrs to 11:00hrs and 17:00hrs to 20:00hrs, Metro Trains will be available on Green Line: (Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.Ramachandran Central Metro to St. Thomas Mount Metro in every 5 minutes
While on Blue Line, metro will run from Airport to Wimco Nagar Depot in every 6 minutes.
Chennai Rains Live: At the medical camp organised by the state BJP, former Telangana Governor and BJP leader Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “The government is saying that they have arranged a lot of medical camps. But, it should reach more people."
“You can see here people are in need and people want us to give them medicines. Now, not only we have extended it but we are checking the BP and sugar. Not only this, we are also giving some bread for the children. But the government is saying that the Dy CM and the CM are visiting all the places. It's the duty of the government to look after the people..." she added.
Chennai Rains Live: Heavy rain continued to lash Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, bringing residential neighborhoods and roads under knee-deep water and leading to traffic congestion besides affecting public transport services.
Visuals from the city show incessant rainfall leading to waterlogging in several parts of the city, including the Madley Subway and the Mambalam area.
As parts of the state reel under the heavy downpours, efforts to pump out the water are underway in the city including the Choolaimedu area.

Tamil Nadu Chennai Rains LIVE: A depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm which is moving in a northwest direction at a speed of 10 km/h.
It is located 440 km from Chennai, 460 km from Puducherry, and 530 km from Nellore. The storm is expected to make landfall near the coast between Puducherry and Nellore by tomorrow morning.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several places in the South Coast and Rayalaseema, with extremely heavy rainfall likely in some areas. Along the coast, wind speeds of 40-60 km/h are expected.

1. Waterlogging in B-Road, Koyambedu is observed, passengers are requested to access Koyambedu Metro Station through Foot over bridge from Poonamallee High Road, Landmark – Rohini Theatre side.
2. Park side entry escalator is switched off in B1 entrance at Puratchi Thalaivar Dr.M.G.Ramachandran Central Metro Station for safety purposes. Passengers are advised to exercise care while using the staircase at all Metro Stations.
3.Passengers are advised not to halt their vehicles at Koyambedu Metro, St.Thomas Mount and Arumbakkam Metro station and parking lots prone to water stagnation from 15-10-2024 to 17-10-2024 (Dates will be further updated based on the weather condition).
