Batting first, the Rohit Sharma-led side had scored 229/9, which was considered to be a below-par total. However, the Indian bowling attack bowled out the English side for 129 in 34.5 overs.
England was on the backfoot right from the powerplay, as they lost the wickets of Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Ben Stokes in the first 10 overs. This was followed by the wicket of Jos Butlet in the 15th over, and the dismissal of Moeen Ali in the 25th over. At halfway down the innings, England were at 84/6. The lower order also failed to stitch a partnership, with the team getting bundled up at 129 in the 35th over.
Earlier, England bowlers led by David Willey kept India down to 229-9 despite skipper Rohit Sharma's 87 in a must-win World Cup match for the defending champions on Sunday.
Willey, a left-arm quick, returned figures of 3-45, including the prized wicket of Virat Kohli for a nine-ball duck, after England elected to bowl at Lucknow in search of a victory to cling on to their slim hopes of making the semi-finals.
Fast bowler Chris Woakes and leg-spinner Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each and a spirited performance by the fielders, who threw themselves around to stop runs, made England look a like a different side.
The 2019 champions sit bottom of the 10-team table with four defeats from five matches.
Suryakumar Yadav made a fighting 49 before becoming Willey's third wicket but the tail played out the full 50 overs.
Chris Woakes bowled opener Shubman Gill for nine in the fourth over after England, who sit bottom of the 10-team table, elected to bowl in their bid for victory and keep their slim hopes alive of making the semi-finals.
Woakes got one more to send Shreyas Iyer (four) back to the pavilion for four as India slipped to 40-3 in 12 overs.
Rohit Sharma led India will bat first at the Ekana cricket stadium in Lucknow. The IND vs ENG encounter will see no changes in the playing XI from both sides. The last time these two teams met for an ICC ODI World Cup match in India, the game ended in a draw.
Rohit Sharma-led India will be buoyed by the fact that the hosts are the only team in the tournament without a defeat so far. The Indians would be particularly pleased with a win over New Zealand in the last game, who have been a thorn in the side of the Men in Blue in recent ICC events.
Against the Black Caps, India's bowling and batting were put to the test and came out on top. India's bowling line-up featuring stars like Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah managed to take the Kiwis from 205/4 at one stage to 273 all out in 50 overs. Similarly, in the batting department, despite losing a couple of quick wickets after a solid opening partnership, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja's valiant efforts enabled India to chase down the total with ease.
England have won just one of their last five matches in the tournament. The only team they have beaten is Bangladesh (by 137 runs). They lost to New Zealand (by 9 wickets), Afghanistan (by 69 runs), South Africa (by 229 runs) and Sri Lanka (by 8 wickets). Facing the best team in the tournament at this stage won't make things easy for England.

Chris Woakes drew first blood after he dismissed Shubman Gill for 9 runs in the 3.6 overs (IND 26-1).

In the 36.5 overs, Adil Rashid bagged a big wicket in the game after he dismissed Rohit for 87 runs from 101 balls.
In the second powerplay, the 'Men in Blue' scored 145 runs. On the other hand, Jos Butler's side bagged three wickets.
Ravindra Jadeja was removed from the crease by Rashid in the 40.3 overs for 8 runs (IND 182-6).
Mohammed Shami too couldn't stand still in front of the English pacers and was dismissed in the 42nd over after scoring just 1 run (IND 183-7).
In the 46th over, India crossed the 200 ru-mark after Suryakumar Yadav smashed a six over the fine-leg.
Suryakumar was unlucky after missing his half-century for just one run when Willey picked his wicket in the 46.2 overs (IND 208-8).
In the last ball of the inning, Jasprit Bumrah was dismissed after a run out from Jos Buttler (IND 229-9).
In the third and last powerplay of the first inning, India bagged 49 runs. On the other hand, England picked up four wickets.
Coming to England's bowling attack Willey bagged three wickets in his 10-over spell and gave away 45 runs.
When the run chase began, England looked strong in the first four overs, scoring 26 for no loss.
From the 5th over onwards, they began losing wickets consistently.
Bumrah drew first blood, as he sent back a dangerous looking Dawid Malan for a score of 16.
Joe Root was dismissed by Bumrah on the very next ball, sending him back for a duck.
Ben Stokes, who struggled for 10 balls, was also dismissed for a duck by Shami.
Bairstow, who was out in the middle for sometime since opening the innings, was the fourth wicket to go down, barely at the team's total of 39.
At the end of first powerplay, England scored 40 runs and lost 4 wickets.
Captain Jos Butler was clean bowled in the 15th over, leaving England at 52/5.
Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali shared a short partnership of 29 runs, before the latter was picked by Shami in the 24th over.
Halfway down the line, England were 84/6 in 25 overs.
The lower order was also quickly bundled up, with Chris Woakes being stumped on Ravindra Jadeja's flighted delivery in the 29th over.
Livingstone was the next to go, as he was caught leg before by Kuldeep in the 30th over. England lost 8 wickets even before crossing the 100-run mark.
Shami completed his 4-wicket haul, knocking off the stumps of Adil Rashid in the 34th over.
In the next over, Bumrah picked up his third wicket as clean bowled Mark Wood to end the match.
