Having taken a 28-run first innings lead, Indian bowlers started aggressively with Akash Deep uprooting Tom Latham's stumps straightaway. The Kiwis were three down for 44 before Will Young and Daryl Mitchell arrested the slide with a 50-run stand for the fourth wicket. However, it was the spin duo of Jadeja and Ashwin as they wrecked havoc into the New Zealand batting line-up to put India in the driver's seat and avoid a series whitewash. With just one wicket to take on Day 3 morning, Indian bowlers would like to wrap things up as quickly as possible before chasing the target with ease. New Zealand are currently leading by 143 runs. Although India have lost the first two Tests, a win in Mumbai would boost Rohit Sharma and Co. before they fly out to Australia for a five-match series in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
India bowlers put up a splendid show in the second innings by restricting New Zealand to 171/9 on Day 2. Will Young top scored for New Zealand with 51 as rest of his teammates surrendered in front of India's spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. While Ashwin finished the day with 3/63, Jadeja got four wickets for 52 runs. New Zealand lead India by 143 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja's 5/65 was his 14th fiver-wicket haul. Thus he equalled Late Bishan Singh Bedi for most fifers by an Indian left-arm spinner in Tests. Another interesting fact is that the number of wickets tabel by Jadeja and Bedi in these five-wicket hauls are same - 76.
