The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 started with a bang with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) winning the first three games in the 18th season of the cash-rich league. While RCB defeated defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the tournament opener, SRH rode on Ishan Kishan's maiden IPL hundred to post this year's highest total (286/6) against Rajasthan Royals. In fact, Ishan Kishan also became the firts Indian batter to score an IPL hundred for Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the third game, five-time champions CSK prevailed against Mumbai Indians in a thrilling encounter. The MI vs CSK clash also saw the emergence of 24-year-old Kerala spinner Vignesh Puthur who impressed on his debut with three wickets.Kolkata will host the IPL 2025 final too on May 25.
Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has grown massively in stature to earn the tag of world's best franchise T20 league. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchises in IPL, having won the title five teams each, followed by KKR with three titles.
Into its 18th season, IPL 2025 will have 74 matches, played across 13 venues and will include 12 double-headers. Apart from the 10 actual home venues, matches will be held in Visakhapatnam, Guwahati and the new PCA stadium in Mullanpur. Notably, the afternoon games will begin at 03.30 PM IST while the evening games will begin from 07.30 PM IST.
Delhi Capitals will play their home games in Visakhapatnam and at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi while 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals have Guwahati and Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur as their homes. Punjab Kings will play their four home matches at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh and three games at the picturesque Dharamsala.
What happened during IPL 2025 auction?
For the first-time ever, Saudi Arabia hosted an IPL action. The two-day event that took place in Jeddah, saw 182 players being bought by 10 teams, which included 62 overseas cricketers. A total of ₹639.15 crore was spent into total. India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant became the costliest player ever in an IPL auction after he was picked by LSG for a whopping ₹27 crore, followed Shreyas Iyer, who joined Punjab Kings for a staggering ₹26.75 crore. Thirteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who was bought by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore, became the youngest ever cricketer to be picked by an IPL franchise.
