PremiumVinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Highlights: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is expected to deliver its verdict on whether to grant a silver medal to Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the Paris Olympics, around 6:00 PM Paris time and 9:30 PM IST tonight, Phogat's advocate Vidushpat Singhania said.
"The ad hoc division of CAS has extended time for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling & the International Olympic Committee matter to give a decision till 6-00 p.m. on August 13, 2024," the IOA said in a statement.
After being disqualified from competing for gold at the 50kg freestyle wrestling event in the Paris Olympics on Tuesday, Phogat challenged her disqualification at the CAS on Wednesday and announced her retirement on Thursday. Her case was represented at the CAS by senior advocate Harish Salve.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing LIVE: Former Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly on Sunday opened up on Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the final of women's 50 kg wrestling at the Paris Olympics and said that she deserves the silver medal.
"I don't know what the exact rule is, but I am sure when she went to the finals, she must have qualified properly. So when you go to the finals, it's either silver or gold. She disqualified rightfully or wrongfully, I don't know. But she deserves the silver at least," Ganguly said.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing LIVE: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav today slammed the Indian Olympic Association over its president's remarks regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Olympics.
In a post on X, Yadav said, “The statement of the Indian Olympic Association about the great warrior Vinesh Phogat that the responsibility of the weight and body of the player lies only with her coach and support team is reprehensible."
"Is the Indian Olympic Association pointing a finger at the support team along with the coach? These people are also associated with the association. The question also arises as to who selected the support team. People are asking if the responsibility was only of those people, then why was the chief medical officer sent along," Yadav added.
CAS verdict likely to be OUT today.
Several khaps in Haryana on Sunday came out in support of wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified at the Paris Olympics for being overweight, seeking justice for the grappler and demanded the Bharat Ratna for her.
The khaps (caste-based councils), which held the 'Sarv Khap Mahapanchayat' at Haryana's Charkhi Dadri, also appealed to Phogat to review her decision of taking retirement from wrestling.
"All of us know that if she gets the medal it will be really good. She would have got the medal if such a situation did not arise. If we don't get the medal, people remember us for some time and say we are their champions but if we don't get the medal they forget us as well...I just want to request people to not forget what Vinesh has done for the county...," Neeraj said.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) remained hopeful of a positive resolution of wrestler Vinesh Phogat's application before the Ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her failed weigh-in on the second day of her Women's Wrestling 50kg competition at the Paris Olympic.
In an emotional post on X, Phogat expressed her sense of defeat and gratitude, stating, "Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness."
Nita Ambani said that Vinesh's spirit has inspired the entire nation and called him a "champion of champions".
"I would now like to salute a young girl who's not present here today. But her spirit has inspired the entire nation. She is a true fighter and a winner, not just in the ring but in life. A very brave daughter of our soil and a champion of champions."
Two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra opened up on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal for the silver medal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), following her disqualification from the Olympics, and said that it would be "really good" if the 29-year-old gets the medal.
Vinesh was set to compete against the United States of America's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the gold medal but was disqualified on Wednesday for breaching the weight limit by just 100 grams. After her disqualification, Phogat requested the CAS to award her the silver medal.
"I don't know the exact rule, but I'm sure that when she reached the finals, she must have qualified properly," Ganguly told reporters when asked for his opinion on the matter on the sidelines of the Kolkata Food Festival here.

Taking it to the social media platform 'X', Chaturvedi accused the IOA of abandoning its responsibility towards Indian athletes and failing to protect their interests.
"Wow. So IOA totally washes its hands off any responsibility vis a vis Indian athletes' interest. Vinesh Phogat has truly been denied justice and thrown under the bus, shame on IOA for releasing this statement while very well knowing Phogat's case for silver is being deliberated," Chaturvedi tweeted.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday slammed the Indian Olympic Association over its president's remarks regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Olympics.
In a veiled attack on the Narendra Modi government, Yadav also said that if there was an Olympics for political conspiracy, those in power at the Centre would win without competing.

Considered to one of the greatest freestyle wrestlers of all time, Burroughs is a six-time World Championship gold medalist along who also won the gold at London 2012 Olympics.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing LIVE: UWW president Lalovic though expressed his sympathies with Vinesh, was doubtful if there would be any change in the results as the UWW was only following the rules.
"I am so sorry for what happened, but no matter the size of your country, athletes are athletes. This weigh-in was public, everyone saw what happened. How can we allow someone to compete when we all saw what happened. We don't have any other choice but to follow our rules," NDTV quoted Lalovic as saying.
He also ruled out the possibility of a major overhaul in weigh-in rules. Lalovic added, "We introduced that rule because of the care for the health of the athletes. Athletes have been obliged to weight rules in order to compete. Maybe some slight adjustments in the rules can be made, but we are not changing the rules. We are counseled and helped by our medical commission. They are absolutely against any change."

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live: Amid the days are passing by for the Court of Arbitration for Sports' final verdict on ace Indian wrestler Phogat's plea against her disqualification at the Paris Olympics, cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have stood in support of the wrestler.
While addressing the press on Sunday, as quoted by PTI, Ganguly said, "I don't know the exact rule, but I'm sure that when she reached the finals, she must have qualified properly. So when you go to the finals, it's either a Gold or Silver medal. Whether she was disqualified wrongfully or not, I don't know, but she deserves the Silver medal at least."
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar penned his thoughts about Vinesh's disqualification appeal. He took to X and wrote, "Every sport has rules and those rules need to be seen in context, maybe even revisited at times. Vinesh Phogat qualified fair and square for the finals. Her disqualification by weight, was before the finals, and hence, for her to be robbed of a deserving silver medal defies logic and sporting sense."
“It would have been understandable if an athlete were to have been disqualified for ethical breaches such as the usage of performance enhancing drugs. In that case, to not be awarded any medal and be placed last would be justifiable. However, Vinesh beat her opponents fairly to reach the top two. She definitely deserves a silver medal. While we all wait for a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, let us hope and pray that Vinesh gets the recognition she deserves," Tendulkar added.
