Now start earning money with just 500 subscribers on YouTube: Here’s what you need to know

YouTube has lowered the requirements for its YouTube Partner Program, with creators needing just 500 subscribers to access monetisation methods including paid chat and tipping.

Video-sharing platform YouTube has lowered the eligibility requirements for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). With the new policy, the YPP will be accessible to YouTube creators once they acquire 500 subscribers, half of what YouTube previously required.

As per a report by The Verge, YouTube has also introduced a few monetisation methods for smaller creators, including paid chat, tipping, channel memberships and shopping features.

Other benchmarks are also changing on the video platform. For example, instead of 4,000 valid watch hours, creators will just require 3,000, or 3 million shorts views compared to the previous 10 million. The report states that these lower requirements will initially roll out in the US, the UK, Canada, Taiwan and South Korea.

YouTube says that the same YPP rules will continue for revenue sharing as well. This means that smaller creators will still need to expand their audience to profit from ad revenue.

“YouTube has used its ad revenue sharing program to entice creators to make money, especially to bolster the company’s shortform content in recent months by introducing an ad revenue sharing program for Shorts," the report says.

Not only YouTube, but other platforms such as TikTok too have lowered the bar for creators to access monetization features. For example, TikTok said that its video paywall feature, Series, would be available to creators with more than 10,000 followers but that users with 1,000 followers who met other requirements could also apply to participate in the program.

Recently, YouTube announced to shut down its Stories feature from June 26. Users will lose the ability to create Stories, and any existing posts will automatically disappear after a week.

YouTube is urging creators to explore alternative ways of sharing content on the platform, with a particular emphasis on Community Posts and Shorts. These options have gained prominence as viable alternatives to the soon-to-be-discontinued Stories feature. YouTube has recently expanded the availability of Community Posts, allowing creators to share text-based updates that can have an expiration date.
