iOS 18.2 beta 2 with ChatGPT integration, Genmoji and more released: Here's a look at all the new features
Apple's iOS 18.2 beta 2 for developers includes new features such as ChatGPT in Siri and Camera Control updates. A stable version is projected for early December, while the public beta may be available as soon as next week.
Apple has released iOS 18.2 beta 2 to developers, introducing a range of new features, including new options for Camera Control, the ability to purchase a ChatGPT Plus subscription in Settings, a new Find My option that simplifies locating lost items, and more. Notably, iOS 18.2 brings a second wave of Apple Intelligence features to iPhones, with the key highlights being ChatGPT integration in Siri, Genmoji, Image Playground, and Visual Intelligence. A stable build of iOS 18.2 is expected to be released in early December, with the first public beta potentially rolling out as early as next week.
iOS 18.2 also adds support for localised versions of English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK. While the iOS 18.2 developer beta 1 was only available for iPhone 15 Pro models and the iPhone 16 series, the latest beta update now supports all iOS 18-eligible devices.
Apple's AI features, collectively known as Apple Intelligence, were first announced at WWDC 2024 but were not ready in time for the initial iOS 18 rollout with the iPhone 16. The first wave of these features, including advanced writing tools, conversational Siri, call recording and transcription, and new Focus modes, was released with iOS 18.1 update last week.
What's new with iOS 18.2 beta 2?
1) View ChatGPT usage data in settings:
Apple introduced ChatGPT integration in Siri with iOS 18.2 beta 1, allowing users to connect their OpenAI account. Now, the latest update lets users view their ChatGPT usage limit inside the Settings app and provides an option to upgrade to ChatGPT Premium if needed. For the uninitiated, ChatGPT integration in Siri offers access to ChatGPT, though only a limited number of queries are handled by the latest GPT-4o model. After this limit, OpenAI automatically switches to a more cost-effective GPT-4o mini model.
2) New settings for Camera Control:
Apple is adding more options for Camera Control, the touch-sensitive button introduced with the iPhone 16 series. Users can now lock exposure and focus while taking a picture by double-pressing the Camera Control button. This feature is off by default but can be activated under the ‘Camera Control’ menu in Settings.
Additionally, there’s a new setting to adjust the double-click speed for Camera Control, with options such as ‘Default’, ‘Slow’, and ‘Slower’.
3) Find My now allows sharting location of lost items:
Find My is getting a new feature in iOS 18.2 beta 2 that allows users to share the location of their lost items, making it easier to get help finding them.Users can generate a link for their lost item in the Find My app by selecting "Share Item Location" and pass the links on to their friends or authorities. Importantly, the recipient can access the location of the lost item even if they are not using an Apple device.
The shared link will automatically expire after a week or once the item is found. Additionally, a new “Show Contact Info" option in the Find My app, when enabled, directs the recipient to a webpage displaying the owner's contact information, including phone number and email address.
