Android 16 may adopt Apple’s Dynamic Island-inspired notifications: Here's what we know so far
Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 suggests a feature akin to Apple's Dynamic Island, positioned differently. As Android 16 approaches, Google may introduce rich notifications that allow apps to create interactive elements, enhancing user interaction with notifications and quick actions.
Google recently rolled out Android 15 to its Pixel devices, but there are already murmurs about new features expected with Android 16, which is still a few months away from an official announcement. Unlike Apple’s iOS, Google has traditionally allowed OEMs to customize the user experience, while stock Android remains relatively stable and free of many experimental features. However, that may be about to change with Android 16, as Google is reportedly taking cues from OEMs like OnePlus and Infinix and adopting key notification elements similar to Apple’s Dynamic Island.

According to a recent report by Android Authority, Google will enable apps to create Rich Ongoing Notifications with the Android 16 update. This new notification system will reportedly allow apps to create “chips" in the status bar instead of just icons. While it’s not yet clear what tapping on these notification chips will do, it’s likely that Google plans to add an app-provided dialogue box that could display more information about the notification or allow quick actions like playing or pausing music, skipping tracks, and more—all from the same screen.
The new feature was spotted in the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 release, suggesting there is a very real possibility of it coming to the latest Android build. In mockup images of different apps showcased by Android Authority, it seems Google's implementation of the Dynamic Island could differ from Apple’s in one crucial way: Android 16 may place the pill-shaped cutout in the empty space on the top left corner of the status bar, while the Dynamic Island covers the area near the notch on iPhones. However, it's important to note that this feature is in its early stages, and we could see a complete overhaul as we approach the Android 16 launch in 2025.
