Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar is one of the biggest legends in cricket. Under his leadership, India won several tournaments, including the  1984 Asia Cup. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1980.

10,000 Test runs

Gavaskar was the first cricketer in the history of the sport to score 10,000 Test runs.

Highest runs by a debutant in a series

Gavaskar hit 774 runs in his debut Test series against West Indies in 1971. He still holds the record for the highest number of runs scored by a debutant in a series.

Highest runs against West Indies

Gavaskar holds the record for scoring the highest number of runs and centuries against West Indies, one of the best teams in cricket. He has scored 2,749 runs and 13 centuries against the team till date.

58 century partnerships in Test cricket

Gavaskar has achieved 58 Test century partnerships  with 18 different players in his career. This is the highest achieved by any player so far.

Four consecutive centuries at two venues

Gavaskar is one of the most consistent batsmen in cricket history and the only one to hit four consecutive centuries at two different venues: Port of Spain and Wankhede stadium.

Over 100 Test catches

Excluding wicket keepers, Gavaskar was the first Indian fielder to take over 100 catches in Test cricket.

Centuries in both Test innings

Australian cricketers Ricky Ponting and David Warner, along with Gavaskar, are the only cricketers to have hit centuries in both innings of a Test match on three separate occasions. 

Most Test centuries

Although this record is now held by Sachin Tendulkar, Gavaskar held the record for the highest number of Test centuries (34) up till 2005.

Gavaskar is the only cricketer to have hit double centuries at two different venues, namely Port of Spain and Wankhede stadium.

Carrying the bat in Test cricket

Gavaskar became the first Indian cricketer to carry his bat throughout a Test innings in 1983. He scored a whopping 127 runs in the Faisalabad Test match.
