In accordance with the wishes of creator Alfred Nobel, Nobel Awards are being awarded since 1901 to individuals, groups, and institutions for work that has significantly advanced humankind.
Here are five things to know about the prizes and their creator.
NOBEL MEDAL
On the obverse of each medal, Alfred Nobel is depicted in left profile. The obverses of the medals for physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and literature are similar and feature Alfred Nobel's likeness along with the dates of his birth and death.
NOBEL PRIZE MONEY
When the winners get their awards, they are handed money in the form of a paper that lists the prize money. The monetary prize for 2023 is $1million. Prize money is frequently donated by winners to support educational, charitable, or artistic endeavours.
FEMALE LAUREATES
In contrast to earlier decades, the percentage of women who win has risen gradually in recent years. Nearly three times as many women have received awards since 2000—31 total—than during the previous two decades.
MISSING MATHEMATICS
Why there isn't an award for mathematics has been a topic of discussion for a while. Long-standing rumors say it was partly because Gosta Mittag-Leffler, a mathematician, was an estranged girlfriend of Alfred Nobel.
PRIZE CEREMONIES
The Nobel Prizes, with the exception of the Peace Prize, are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, at the yearly Prize Award Ceremony on December 10, the day of Alfred Nobel's passing
