New Delhi: In the interim budget presented today, the finance minister Piyush Goyal announced steps to make the Income Tax department more technology driven.

Taking forward the online filing of returns, assessment, queries and refunds, the project looks to make the process more assessee- friendly where all tax returns filed will be processed in 24 hours and the refund initiated simultaneously.

It also envisages a back-office manned by tax experts where the verification and assessment of returns selected for scrutiny will be done anonymously and there will be no interaction between the tax payers and tax officers.

Preethi Khurana Editor at Cleartax.in welcomes the move as a positive development for all parties concerned. “Online scrutiny of returns has been going on in select cities for a while and has been successful where the cases are straightforward. The challenge will be when the case is more complex requiring extensive submission of documents and explanation. Implementation will be the key”, she said.
