PremiumElection Results 2024 Highlights: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a historic third consecutive term in Haryana, having won 48 seats in the assembly elections, while the Congress party follows with 37 seats. In Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference-Congress alliance is on track to form the government, having emerged victorious with a total of 42 seats in the J&K Assembly polls.
The counting of votes for the two assembly elections began at 8 am.
In Jammu Kashmir, the NC-Congress alliance crossed the majority mark with 48 seats. The BJP won 29 seats. In Haryana, the BJP won 48 seats while Congress secured 33 seats, as per EC trends.
The majority mark in both the assemblies in 46 seats.
The 90 seats in Haryana voted in one phase on October 5 recording a turnout of about 68 per cent. Jammu and Kashmir voted in three phases – September 18, 25, and October 1 – for its 90 seats, marking a voter turnout of 63.88 per cent. The turnout was an increase from the 58.58 per cent in the Lok Sabha elections.
In 2014 and 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Haryana Assembly elections. The saffron party now aims for a hat-trick of electoral victories in the 2024 elections. The Congress party hopes to make a comeback after spending a decade in opposition in the state. Alongside the BJP and Congress, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) are also in the fray
Jammu Kashmir elections first in 10 years
For Jammu and Kashmir, it was the first Assembly elections in 10 years. This was also the first Assembly election in the UT after the abrogation of special status under Article 370 in August 2019.
In the 2014 assembly elections, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP formed a rare coalition government with the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the government did not last long, as the BJP withdrew from the alliance in 2018. Jammu and Kashmir has been under central rule since then. The Union Territory may now be on course to have its first elected government since 2018
The National Conference (NC) and the Congress contested J&K assembly elections 2024 as part of an alliance. The BJP, the PDP, some regional parties and independents are main players.
What Exit Polls predicted?
The Congress party is predicted to wrest power from the BJP in Haryana, exit polls revealed on Saturday. The pollsters have, however, predicted a hung house in Jammu and Kashmir where first assembly elections were held in a decade. These elections were also first assembly polls in the erstwhile state after abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. J&K was also bifurcated into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh post the abrogation.
The Congress party is expected to win anywhere between 49-55 seats of the 90 seats in Haryana where the majority mark is 46, according to exit polls released after single-phase polling in the state with about 67 per cent turnout on Saturday.
In Jammu and Kashmir, Pradeep Gupta's Axis My India predicted 35-45 seats to the NC-Congress-CPIM alliance and 24-34 seats to the BJP. The PDP is predicted to win 4-6 seats while others are predicted to win 8-27 seats.
While the idea behind the exit polls is to reflect public sentiment well before the actual results are announced, their accuracy has faced scrutiny many times in the past.
Today's results will set the tone for the next round of assembly polls in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi. The performance of the parties, particularly the BJP and Congress, may also have an impact on the upcoming elections.

Elections Results Live: Three independent candidates have claimed victory in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls, with four others currently leading in various constituencies.
In Inderwal, independent candidate Payare Lal Sharma narrowly defeated veteran politician Gulam Mohammad Saroori by just 643 votes. Sharma garnered 14,195 votes, while Saroori, also running as an independent, received 13,552 votes.
Meanwhile, in Bani, Dr. Rameshwar Singh, another independent candidate, emerged victorious against BJP's former MLA Jewan Lal by a margin of 2,048 votes. Singh secured 18,672 votes, while Lal received 16,624 votes.

Elections Results Live: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has stated that her party will assume the role of a "constructive opposition," following its poorest electoral performance since its inception in 1999.
Earlier in the day, her daughter Iltija Mufti conceded defeat while counting was still underway for the Bijbehara seat.
Currently, the PDP has secured wins in two seats, Kupwara and Pulwama.
Historically, the PDP had a strong showing in its early elections, winning 16 seats in 2002, 21 in 2008, and 28 in 2014. However, this time, the party has struggled in its south Kashmir stronghold, leading in only two out of 11 seats.
Analysts suggest that the perception in the valley that the PDP is unlikely to regain power has driven voters to support the National Conference-Congress alliance, which is seen as more viable.
Additionally, the PDP's controversial alliance with the BJP in 2014, perceived as a betrayal of the popular vote in Kashmir, has further impacted its electoral standing.

Wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat secured victory in the Julana assembly constituency on October 8.
Speaking to the media, Phogat expressed her gratitude to the people for their support and confidence in the Congress forming a government in Haryana.
“This was a people’s battle, and they’ve won and I was just a face. I am thankful to all the love and respect that I’ve received," she said.
On Congress trailing behind BJP, she said: “Let’s wait for the final results. I am sure Congress will definitely win."

Election Results Live: The Election Commission of India has started declaring seats in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024.
BJP won the Basholi and Udhampur East Assembly seat in Jammu and Kashmir. Ranbir Singh Pathania won the Udhampur East seat with a margin of 2349 votes.
Meanwhile, JKNC won Hazratbal assembly seat. JKNC candidate Salman Sagar won the constituency with a margin of 10295 votes. The Farooq Abdullah-led party also won Gurez with a margin of 1132 votes.

Election Results Live: Early trends indicate that the BJP has yet to make a mark in the Kashmir Valley, trailing even in Gurez, the only seat they had a chance of winning.
However, in the lead-up to poll counting day, the party was seen as a strong contender in the Jammu division, contesting all 47 seats there. The BJP is heavily relying on the support of the Pahari ethnic group and the Padari tribe, which received Scheduled Tribe (ST) status earlier this year.
In the predominantly Hindu districts of Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur, which together encompass 24 Assembly seats, the BJP appears poised for wins.
Current trends show Surjit Singh Slathia leading in Samba, Pawan Kumar Gupta ahead in Udhampur West, and Bharat Bhushan leading in Kathua, suggesting that these regions could play a crucial role in the party's bid for government formation.
