PremiumElection Results 2024 Highlights: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a historic third consecutive term in Haryana, having won 48 seats in the assembly elections, while the Congress party follows with 37 seats. In Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference-Congress alliance is on track to form the government, having emerged victorious with a total of 42 seats in the J&K Assembly polls.
The counting of votes for the two assembly elections began at 8 am.
In Jammu Kashmir, the NC-Congress alliance crossed the majority mark with 48 seats. The BJP won 29 seats. In Haryana, the BJP won 48 seats while Congress secured 33 seats, as per EC trends.
The majority mark in both the assemblies in 46 seats.
The 90 seats in Haryana voted in one phase on October 5 recording a turnout of about 68 per cent. Jammu and Kashmir voted in three phases – September 18, 25, and October 1 – for its 90 seats, marking a voter turnout of 63.88 per cent. The turnout was an increase from the 58.58 per cent in the Lok Sabha elections.
In 2014 and 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Haryana Assembly elections. The saffron party now aims for a hat-trick of electoral victories in the 2024 elections. The Congress party hopes to make a comeback after spending a decade in opposition in the state. Alongside the BJP and Congress, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) are also in the fray
Jammu Kashmir elections first in 10 years
For Jammu and Kashmir, it was the first Assembly elections in 10 years. This was also the first Assembly election in the UT after the abrogation of special status under Article 370 in August 2019.
In the 2014 assembly elections, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP formed a rare coalition government with the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the government did not last long, as the BJP withdrew from the alliance in 2018. Jammu and Kashmir has been under central rule since then. The Union Territory may now be on course to have its first elected government since 2018
The National Conference (NC) and the Congress contested J&K assembly elections 2024 as part of an alliance. The BJP, the PDP, some regional parties and independents are main players.
What Exit Polls predicted?
The Congress party is predicted to wrest power from the BJP in Haryana, exit polls revealed on Saturday. The pollsters have, however, predicted a hung house in Jammu and Kashmir where first assembly elections were held in a decade. These elections were also first assembly polls in the erstwhile state after abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. J&K was also bifurcated into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh post the abrogation.
The Congress party is expected to win anywhere between 49-55 seats of the 90 seats in Haryana where the majority mark is 46, according to exit polls released after single-phase polling in the state with about 67 per cent turnout on Saturday.
In Jammu and Kashmir, Pradeep Gupta's Axis My India predicted 35-45 seats to the NC-Congress-CPIM alliance and 24-34 seats to the BJP. The PDP is predicted to win 4-6 seats while others are predicted to win 8-27 seats.
While the idea behind the exit polls is to reflect public sentiment well before the actual results are announced, their accuracy has faced scrutiny many times in the past.
Today's results will set the tone for the next round of assembly polls in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi. The performance of the parties, particularly the BJP and Congress, may also have an impact on the upcoming elections.

Elections results Live: The BJP leader called Rahul Gandhi an "entitled dynast" and "immature leader" who can't accept defeat graciously.
"Rahul Gandhi is an entitled dynast and an immature leader who does not have any grace especially when he loses...Rahul Gandhi is accusing the election commission and the entire electoral process because he has lost the elections in Haryana and he can't come to terms with it," Poonawala said in a self-made video.
After J-K National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah announced that party Vice President Omar Abdullah would be the next Chief Minister, the newly-elected MLA Omar said on Wednesday that the decision ultimately lies with legislators and the alliance.
"I am very grateful for the confidence that he (Farooq Abdullah) has reposed in me. But that decision is of the legislators to make. It is a decision of the alliance to make. I love my father dearly and I am very grateful for the support that he showed me yesterday but finally the say has to be of the legislators and I am always one to do things by the rules and by the book. This is the procedure that has to be followed and that is what will be done," he said.
Aam Aadmi Party National spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar on Wednesday said that the party would be contesting the Delhi assembly elections alone.
Speaking to ANI, Kakkar said "We will contest the Delhi Assembly elections alone. On one side it's the overconfident Congress and on the other side, it is the arrogant Bharatiya Janata Party. We will keep our head down and let our work done in the last 10 years speak for itself."
Taking to X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “My heartfelt thanks to the people of Jammu and Kashmir - India's victory in the state is a victory of the Constitution, a victory of democratic self-respect.
We are analysing the unexpected results of Haryana. We will inform the Election Commission about the complaints coming from many assembly constituencies.
Heartfelt thanks to all the people of Haryana for their support and to our Babbar Sher workers for their tireless hard work.
We will continue this fight for rights, for social and economic justice, for truth, and will keep raising your voice."
On Haryana and J&K elections results, Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan says, "...having such a great percentage of votes and winning a great number of seats is a great sign of change there. Elections results Live: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) celebrated its debut in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, with leader Arvind Kejriwal congratulating the party for opening its account in its fifth state. Mehraj Malik, a District Development Council member, won against BJP’s Gajay Singh Rana in Doda, polling 23,228 votes to Rana's 18,690 votes.
The NC scored big, winning 42 out of the 51 seats it contested, while the Congress secured 6 of the 32 seats it fielded. The BJP emerged as the second-largest party with 29 seats, an improvement from its previous high of 25 seats in the 2014 elections. Despite focusing on its stronghold in the Jammu region, J&K BJP chief Ravinder Raina lost his Nowshera assembly seat. Independents secured 7 seats, and the PDP managed to win 3 seats, with Iltija Mufti, daughter of party president Mehbooba Mufti, among the notable losses.

Elections results Live: Party insiders believe that overconfidence, factionalism, and an excessive reliance on a single community significantly hindered the Congress in the recent Haryana assembly elections.
After a decade out of power, the party aimed to make a strong comeback but faced a shocking defeat. Despite viewing Haryana as a key target due to a decade of anti-incumbency and previous gains in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress fell short of its goal.
In Haryana, the Congress secured over 39 percent of the vote share, with the margin between them and the BJP being less than one percent.
However, this was not enough to unseat the BJP, which is now poised to form a government for an unprecedented third consecutive term in the state.

Elections results Live: When Nayab Singh Saini, a relatively inexperienced leader, took over from Manohar Lal Khattar as Chief Minister of Haryana in March, the BJP aimed to inject fresh energy into a party unit grappling with a decade of anti-incumbency. Although the Lok Sabha elections posed a challenge, with the BJP's seats dropping from ten to five, Wednesday’s results demonstrated that the party's gamble on Saini was successful.
As an OBC representative, Saini left no stone unturned to ensure the BJP secured a third consecutive term in the state.
His government focused on outreach efforts directed toward the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Scheduled Castes (SCs), responding to a perceived consolidation of Jat support behind the Congress party.
Declaring himself as the party's CM face ahead of the results, Saini crafted a campaign centered on government jobs, emphasizing that the BJP was providing positions “on merit."
He criticized the previous Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led administration for allegedly distributing jobs through “kharchi (favoritism) and parchi (bribes)," positioning his party as the cleaner option in Haryana politics.

Other family members faced defeats, including Dushyant Chautala, the former Deputy Chief Minister, who lost in Uchana Kalan. Sunaina Chautala, daughter-in-law of Devi Lal’s eldest son, also lost in Fatehabad.

Election results Live: The Congress party has recorded its worst performance in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls, winning only one out of 29 contested seats in the Jammu region. Several key figures, including two working presidents, faced defeat in this election.
In a pre-poll alliance with the National Conference (NC), Congress fielded 32 candidates mainly in Jammu, while the NC put forward 51. Additionally, the CPI(M) and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) each received one seat, and the two larger parties engaged in a 'friendly contest' in five constituencies.
In the Jammu region, the sole victory for Congress came in the Rajouri seat, a sharp decline from the five seats won in 2014.
