Shortly after being declared the winner of the Jammu Kashmir Assembly Elections, Abdullah also stated that the ‘balance of representation’ was going to be a challenge for the new government. “This government will be as much a govt for those who voted for BJP as much as for those who voted for NC and Congress," Omar Abdullah said in an interview with the deKoder.
The National Conference and the Congress are set to form the Jammu and Kashmir government after securing a majority on Tuesday. The BJP garnered 29 seats while the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP secured three. NC chief Farooq Abdullah said his son and senior party leader Omar Abdullah would be the next Chief Minister.
The Union Territory held its first assembly elections in ten years, which is also the first assembly poll after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 that granted special status. Voting was held in three phases in the 90 assembly seats: September 18, September 25, and October 1.
According to poll panel data, 63.45 per cent voter turnout was recorded in all three phases. A voter turnout of 61% was registered in the first phase, 57.3% in the second phase of voting and 68.72% in the third phase.
In the multi-cornered fight, the National Conference and the Congress fought the elections in an alliance and the People's Democratic Party, in addition to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the two other major players.
Various exit poll projections on Saturday placed the National Conference-Congress alliance in pole position with the regional party predicted to get the lion's share of the seats.

Jammu & Kashmir Election Results Live: The individual performance of the Congress appears to have hit an all-time low with only one of its 29 candidates managing a victory within the Jammu region. Prominent leaders including two working presidents lost the elections.

Jammu & Kashmir Election Results Live: Veteran Congress leader Choudhary Lal Singh was defeated by BJP candidate Darshan Kumar on Tuesday in his traditional stronghold of Basholi in Kathua district. Data from the Election Commission indicates that he lost to Kumar by a margin of 16,034 votes.
Lal Singh has previously lost three consecutive general assembly elections to Union minister Jitendra Singh in 2014, 2019, and 2024. In the last Lok Sabha poll, the Union Minister secured a lead of 14,000 votes in the Basholi segment.

Jammu & Kashmir Election Results Live: Former Jammu and Kashmir Deputy CM and BJP leader Kavinder Gupta opined on Tuesday that the National Conference would ‘kick’ Congress out of its poll alliance.
"On 90% of seats we have won, Congress' performance was less than 10%... I think they (NC) will kick out Congress... No matter who becomes the CM, the primary objective should be to work for the welfare of J&K," he said.
Iltija Mufti — the daughter of PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has lost the Srigufwara-Bijbehara seat by 9770 votes. JKNC leader Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri was declared the winner.
