Bypoll Results Highlights: INDIA bloc wins 10 of 13 seats, BJP gets 2; Kharge flags ‘falling' credibility of PM Modi

Bypoll Results Live Updates: The TMC won all four seats of West Bengal. The Congress won four seats - two each in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The AAP won the lone seat in Punjab. An Independent candidate won Bihar's Rupauli seat.

Bypoll Results Highlights: The Election Commission has declared results for all the 13 assembly seats that went to bypolls on July 10. The Opposition's INDIA bloc emerged as a major gainer. INDIA bloc won 10 seats, while the BJP won just 2. One seat was bagged by an Independent candidate.

Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress won all four seats of West Bengal that went to bypolls. The Congress has bagged four seats - two each in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The Aam Aadmi Party won the lone seat in Punjab. An Independent candidate won Bihar's Rupauli seat.

The BJP has bagged one seat each in Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh . Rupauli seat in Bihar went to independent candidate.

TMC sweeps West Bengal

In West Bengal's Raiganj seat, TMC leader Krishna Kalyani defeated BJP leader Manas Kumar Ghosh by over 50,000 votes. Madhupurna Thakur of TMC defeated Binay Biswas of BJP by about 33,000 votes in Bagda seat of West Bengal. TMC leader Mukut Adhikari win the Ranaghat Dakshin seat by about 39,000 votes.

TMC candidate Supti Pandey defeated BJP Kayan Chaubey by a margin of about 62,000 votes from Maniktala Assembly constituency.

Congress wins 2 seats in Himachal Pradesh, BJP bags 1

The Congress won two of the three seats that went to bypolls in Himachal Pradesh.  Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, won the Dehri bypolls.  Congress candidate Hardeep Singh Bawa has also won from Nalagarh seat in Himachal Pradesh defeating KL Thakur of the BJP by about 8,900 votes. 

BJP candidate Ashish Sharma defeated Congress leader Pushpinder Verma by about 1500 votes in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur seat. 

In Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Mohinder Bhagat won Jalandhar West bypoll defeating Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sheetal Angural by over 37000 votes, according to Election Commission of India.

NDA Vs INDIA

The bypolls are seen as significant test for the opposition INDIA bloc as it faced off against the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in first electoral battle after Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

The general elections, the results of which was announced on June 4, saw the BJP falling short of majority and opposition INDIA bloc gaining strength. The BJP finally bagged 240 Lok Sabha seats - 32 short of the majority.

Narendra Modi took oath Prime Minister for the third record time as BJP-led NDA managed to cross the halfway mark of 272 with an overall 293 seats. The Congress-led INDIA bloc clinched 232 seats.

Congress wins both seats in Uttarakhand

The Congress has won both assembly seats in bypolls in Uttarakhand. Qazi Mohammad Nizammudin won the Mangraul bypoll by a thin margin of about 400 votes. In Badrinath too, Congress candidate Lakhapat Singh Butola defeated former sitting MLA Rajendra Bhandari by a margin of over 5000 votes.

The DMK was leading in the sole seat in Tamil Nadu, Vikravandi that went to the bypolls. In Bihar's Rupauli seat, independent candidate Shankar Singh won the bypolls by defeating JD-U's KP Mandal. 

Why bypolls?

Bypolls to these 13 assembly seats in seven states, held on July 10, were necessitated following vacancies created due to deaths or resignations of incumbent MLAs from different parties.

Of the 13 seats which went to the polls, the BJP, the Congress and the TMC had each held two, while one seat each was held by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Janata Dal (United), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Independents held the remaining three seats.

On the by-elections in West Bengal, CM Mamata Banerjee said, "Three out of four seats were of BJP which have now been won by TMC... This victory is the victory of the people and I thank the people, we will dedicate this victory on July 21st..."

Bypoll Results Live: Congress flags ‘falling political credibility of Modi and Shah’

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said the bypoll results were a "strong evidence of the falling political credibility of [PM] Modi and [Amit] Shah." Hailing the results where INDIA bloc won 110 of 13 seats, Kharge said, "This victory shows that the people have now completely rejected the arrogance, misgovernance and negative politics of the BJP."

Bypoll Results Live: The TMC won bypolls for all four Assembly seats in West Bengal.  TMC candidate Supti Pandey defeated BJP Kayan Chaubey by a margin of about 62,000 votes from Maniktala Assembly constituency. Bypoll Results Live: Why were bypolls necessitated?

Bypoll Results Live: The bye elections to the 13 assembly seats in seven states, held on July 10, were necessitated following vacancies created due to deaths or resignations of incumbent MLAs from different parties. Many MLAs from different states were elected to Lok Sabha in the 2024 general elections. 

Of the 13 seats which went to the polls, the BJP, the Congress and the TMC had each held two, while one seat each was held by the BSP, the JD-U, the DMK and the AAP. Independents had held the remaining three seats.

Bypoll Results Live: The TMC is is all set to sweep all 4 seats of West Bengal. While the Mamata Banerjee-led party has won three seats, it was leading in one seat.

Bypoll Results Live: Opposition INDIA bloc has won 6 of the 13 seats in the assembly bypolls, the result of which is being announced today, July 13. Of the six seats, the TMC has won three in West Bengal while the Congress and the AAP won one seat each in Himachal Pradesh and Punjabm respectively. The BJP won one seat in Himachal Pradesh.
