As the 8th Pay Commission is expected to be set up soon, employee unions are likely to concentrate on the fitment factor and related details for salary and pension adjustments.
The 8th Pay Commission could be expected to take effect by January 1, 2026, according to reports. As per key stakeholders, the terms of reference for the 8th Pay Commission are likely to be approved soon by the central government.
“We expect the Terms of Reference to get the government's nod soon. It should be approved at the earliest,” Shiv Gopal Mishra, secretary, staff side of the National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery, told NDTV Profit.
The 8th Pay Commission will revise the pensions, allowances, and salaries of central government retirees and employees. Additionally, the revisions under the 8th Pay Commission will also adjust the Dearness Allowance (DA) in accordance with inflation.
Nearly 50 lakh central government employees, including defence personnel, are the beneficiaries of the 8th Pay Commission.
Around 65 lakh Central government pensioners, including defence retirees, are expected to benefit due to the latest Commission.
The government has not given any details on the percentage of salary hikes under the 8th Pay Commission. As per the fitment factor, the salary of employees could be hiked, according to various reports.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on January 16 announced that the Cabinet has approved the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission to revise salaries and pensions.
The central government constituted a pay commission typically once every ten years to review and recommend changes to the salary structure of government employees. Factors including inflation, the state of the economy, income disparities, and related indicators are considered by the Commission. Additionally, it reviews bonuses, perks, allowances, and other benefits provided to government employees.
Presently, the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission, formed in 2014 by the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, are followed. These recommendations were implemented on January 1, 2016.
