In the case pertaining to the death of three UPSC aspirants after flooding in Rau's IAS coaching centre, the accused was sent to 14-day judicial custody by the Tis Hazari Court on Monday.

“This is a very sad incident. We will demolish all the encroachments there in that area and will recover the drainage system there. The other action taken in this incident is, that all the basements which are illegal or coaching centres are running there, we are taking action against them. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has terminated a Junior Engineer and suspended an Assistant Engineer and seeks an explanation from the concerned Executive Engineer," said Commissioner Ashwani Kumar.

Security has been beefed up in the coaching hub of Old Rajinder Nagar amid a protest by IAS aspirants over the death of three students due to flooding in their institute's basement following heavy rains, officials said on Monday.
The protesters sat on the ground, demanding justice and compensation for the families of the deceased. They are also demanding strict action against those responsible.
"The police have erected barricades near the protest site where students are sitting and protesting. The security personnel were initially checking the ID cards, but now they have allowed everyone to go to the protest site. Two earthmovers have also reached the spot," said Ankit Singh, one of the protesters.
The aspirants have gathered outside Rau's IAS Study Circle whose students died after the basement institute was flooded following rains on Saturday.
MCD terminates services of the Junior Engineer (JE) from the Rajendra Nagar area and suspends the Assistant Engineer (AE). The action comes a day after the civic body sealed shut 13 basement sections of the illegally run coaching centres in the Karol Bagh zone.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj says in LS, "...Those students were in Delhi for the preparation of IAS examinations, but sadly I have to say that due to criminal negligence of Delhi govt, those students have lost their lives. The cause of death of these three students is the utter and absolute apathy of the Aam Aadmi Party ruling dispensation in Delhi... For a decade, AAP has been enjoying power in Delhi, but not doing work for the people of Delhi. MCD has been under AAP for the last 2 years and Delhi Jal Board is also under them. The residents of Old Rajinder Nagar were continuously complaining to the local MLA, Councillor and officers - the MLA kept doing satire but didn't take any action. I request the Home Ministry to form a committee to investigate the matter..."
Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar says, "I have received notices under Rule 267...They have demanded a discussion on the tragic death of UPSC aspirants in Delhi due to negligence of authorities...I find that youth demographic dividend of the country has to be nurtured, I further find that coaching has become virtually commerce. Every time we read a newspaper, the front one or two pages are of their advertisements..."
The student protests in Delhi's Karol Bagh continued on Monday morning after a flooded basement at a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar claimed three lives.
Speaking to ANI, Sahil, aa UPSC aspirant and one of the protestors complained that no officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) visited them.
"We have been sitting here for the last two days but none of the MCD officials came to meet us. We submitted our demands to the DCP, yesterday - seeking information about those who are deceased, those who are admitted to hospitals, copies of FIR, the action that is to be taken and compensation of ₹1 crore to the family of the deceased and ₹50 lakhs to those injured but none of it has been addressed," Sahil said.
Three students died after the basement of the building housing Rau's Study Circle in Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded following rains.
The students complained that the biometric access was mandated to enter libraries which were located mostly in the basements.
"What happened on 27 July was that the biometric got blocked, because of which students got trapped inside when the basement was being flooded with water. This tragedy could have been averted," Manish Kumar, a student said while speaking to ANI on Monday.
Manish further said that alternatives of biometrics need to be ensured so that another such tragedy can be averted.
Five more held in connection with the coaching institute deaths: DCP Harsha Vardhan.
A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in Delhi High Court, seeking the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the Rajendra Nagar incident in which three people lost their lives.
The plea also sought directions for an investigation into the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officers who allegedly failed to act on a complaint received on June 26, 2024.The petitioner is Kutumb, an NGO through its trustee, Jitender Singh, represented by advocate Rudhra Vikram Singh. The plea also sought direction to constitute district-level committees in each district of Delhi to investigate and address illegal commercial construction."Submit an action-taken report concerning the Mukherjee Nagar incident as previously ordered by the court. Formation of a committee to investigate coaching institutes operating illegally or not adhering to standard norms," the plea stated.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Monday gave an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha and demanded a discussion over the accountability for Delhi's infrastructure tragedies and tragic losses.
"I hereby give notice of my intention to ask for leave to move a motion for the adjournment of the business of the house for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent importance, namely: Demanding Accountability for Delhi's Infrastructure Tragedies and Tragic Losses," Tagore stated.
Leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had also criticised the lack of planning at every level that had caused the death of 3 students.
"The death of students due to waterlogging in the basement of a building in Delhi is very unfortunate. A few days ago, a student died due to electric shock during the rains. I express my heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families. This collapse of infrastructure is a collective failure of the system. The common citizen is paying the price of unsafe construction, poor town planning and irresponsibility of institutions at every level by losing his life. A safe and comfortable life is the right of every citizen and the responsibility of the government," Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X.
On Sunday night, SriRam IAS coaching center in Delhi's Old Rajendra Nagar released a statement to address criticism following a social media post. The backlash occurred amid student protests over the deaths of three UPSC civil services aspirants caused by basement flooding at a different institute.
In a clarification statement, SriRam IAS explained that their previous message was misunderstood. “We intended to express that you are on a historic path. To drive meaningful change in society, it's crucial to step away from the conventional and carve out your own unique path. Stand out and be HEARD. We are with you," the clarification read.
A senior official privy to the investigation said the probe so far has indicated two main reasons for the incident -- civic authorities failed to clear the roadside drain before the onset of monsoon and there was no provision for draining out water in the basement where a library was running illegally.
The Delhi Police has formed multiple teams to probe the actual cause of the incident.
A police officer said more than 35 people, including students and coaching centre staffers, were trapped on Saturday evening when water started gushing into the basement following heavy rains.
According to sources in the police department, the basement's gate was closed, but due to the high pressure of the rainwater that gushed in, it got damaged.
According to the officials, the three-storey coaching institute, surrounded by residential and commercial establishments, had permission to use the basement as a store room, but it was being used as library in violation of the rules.
Opposition parties in Delhi on Sunday termed as "murder" the death of three civil services aspirants due to flooding of a building's basement here and the incident a "man-made disaster", as they attacked the AAP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and government over the tragedy.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led party, however, sought to blame the BJP over the incident, saying though it was in power in the municipal body for 15 years, it neglected the city's drainage system.
"Our government has been in power for the last one year and we are working on drainage. I do not want to get into any blame game. I want that there should be an impartial investigation and strict action taken against those responsible," Rajinder Nagar MLA and MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak said.
On biometric access to accommodations and libraries in the area, Manish Kumar, a student, says, "... The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has sealed the basements of 13 Civil Services Institutes.
