Pope Francis faced a critical health crisis on February 28 when a severe bronchospasm led to the inhalation of vomit, significantly compromising his respiratory function, AP reported.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the coordinator of the Pope's hospital care, revealed in an interview with The Milan Daily Corriere della Sera that the medical team briefly contemplated ceasing treatment due to the gravity of the situation.

"We needed to choose whether to stop and let him go or to push it and attempt with all of the possible drugs and the treatments, taking the very high risk of damaging other organs. In the end, that is the path we chose,” Alfieri said.

Despite the risks, the team opted for an aggressive treatment regimen, which posed potential threats to the Pope's kidneys and bone marrow. Alfieri noted that both Pope Francis and his close associates understood the severity of the situation, acknowledging that survival was uncertain.

The Pope remained alert throughout the ordeal, with his personal health assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti, urging the medical team to “try everything. Don't give up”.

Following 38 days of intensive treatment for double pneumonia, Pope Francis was discharged from the hospital on Sunday. The Vatican has advised a two-month period of convalescence, during which the Pope is to avoid large gatherings.

Upon his release, he appeared frail and was seen using nasal tubes for supplemental oxygen.

The Vatican has indicated that it remains uncertain whether Pope Francis will be able to meet with King Charles III during a planned state visit next month or participate in Holy Week activities leading up to Easter on April 20.

Dr Alfieri credited the global outpouring of prayers for the Pope's recovery, suggesting that such support contributed to what he described as near-miraculous improvements during two critical moments.

He emphasized that while the medical interventions were crucial, the Pope's cooperative nature and the spiritual support from around the world played significant roles in his recovery.
