Arunachal Pradesh woke up to tremors on Sunday mornings. An earthquake of measuring 3.8 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Arunachal Pradesh at 5:06 AM on May 18, according to the National Center for Seismology said.
The seismic activity was felt at a depth of 10 kilometres at the Dibang valley district of the state, the NCS said. In a post on X, NCS states, “EQ of M: 3.8, On: 18/05/2025 05:06:33 IST, Lat: 29.03 N, Long: 95.78 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh.”
This comes a day after a 3.4 magnitude earthquake jolted the area located adjacent to Dibang valley. The previous quake occured at a depth of 12 kilometres. The Seismology centre noted that the earthquake's epicentre was at Latitude 28.78 N, and longitude 95.70 E.
“EQ of M: 3.4, On: 17/05/2025 15:11:36 IST, Lat: 28.78 N, Long: 95.70 E, Depth: 12 Km, Location: Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh,” the NCS in a post on X said.
An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 struck Indonesia’s Northern Sumatra region in the wee hours of Sunday, the National Centre for Seismology said. The post on X states, “EQ of M: 4.6, On: 18/05/2025 02:50:22 IST, Lat: 2.86 N, Long: 96.35 E, Depth: 58 Km, Location: Northern Sumatra, Indonesia.”
The seismic activity was reported around :50 am Indian time at a depth of 58 km. Its exact epicentre was Indonesia's Sumatra at Latitude 2.86 N and Longitude 96.35 E.
The intensity of tremors felt at a particular region varies from place to place and depends mostly on the distance from the fault rupture area. According to Britanica, earthquake of magnitude 6 and above are considered strong which can cause moderate damage in populated areas. Meanwhile, tremors stronger than 7 magnitudes can cause serious damage over large areas, including loss of life.
