Cyclone Dana Highlights: The low pressure area, set to transform into a cyclonic storm by October 23, will hit Odisha and West Bengal coast on October 24-25. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alert for the two states.
Meanwhile, Odisha government has announced closure of schools in coastal districts and has begun preparation of ‘100% evacuation’ of people from areas which are at risk of maximum destruction due to cyclone Dana, reported Indian Express.
The meteorological department has predicted the cyclonic storm to hit the Odisha-West Bengal coast this week. The exact location of the landfall is not known, but IMD said, “…the system is very likely to cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of October 24 and early morning October 25 as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph with gusting 120 kmph"
“A low pressure area is very likely to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea during next 24 hours. It is very likely to move west-north-westwards and intensify into a depression by October 22 morning and into a cyclonic storm by October 23 over east-central Bay of Bengal," the IMD said in its latest bulletin.
IMD Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the system is likely to take the shape of a severe cyclonic storm. He said parts of Odisha are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from October 23 onwards.
"Some places in the coastal region may experience 20 cm rainfall on October 24-25. The intensity of the spell may also increase to 20 to 30 cm, and above 30 at some places," he told a local TV channel in Bhubaneswar.
