Delhi rains: Heavy rainfall lashed parts of the capital on Tuesday evening, causing water logging in several areas. At least 12 flights were diverted after the incessant downpour.

IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India also issued advisory for flyers, urging them to keep a tab on their flight status.

Videos from news agencies showed heavy downpour as cars sped by, splashing water.

IMD issues red alert for Delhi; forecasts hail, thunderstorm

Hours before the heavy rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for the Delhi and NCR region.

The weather observatory predicted that hail, thunderstorms are likely to hit parts of Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan today, 17 June.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its weather alert also stated that light to moderate rainfall at few, many places and heavy Rainfall (7-11 cm) is very likely at isolated places over Bihar, East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Madhya Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, Punjab, Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and Uttarakhand.

Southwest Monsoon advances further

The weather observatory also noted that weather conditions have become more favourable for the advancement of the Southwest Monsoon, which now covers more parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, most parts of Chhattisgarh, the remaining parts of Odisha, some parts of Jharkhand, Bihar, and the entire Gangetic West Bengal.

The low-pressure area over Southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal persists over the same region as of 8:30 a.m. IST on Tuesday, 17 June 2025. According to the Met department, it is likely to move slowly west-northwestward and become more marked over Gangetic West Bengal and the neighbourhood during the next 24 hours.

Residents urged to stay indoors

Parts of Delhi saw light, ‘trace’ rainfall on Monday, with the monsoon gradually advancing towards northwest India.

Following the red alert, hailstorm warning for Delhi on Tuesday, IMD also issued a moderate thunderstorm warning, highlighting potential impacts and safety measures for the public.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid travel unless necessary. The weather observatory also advised that electrical appliances should be unplugged to prevent damage from lightning surges.
