The IMD has issued a ‘red alert’ in Delhi till 8:30 am today followed by an orange alert for the next 24 hours. “Moderate rainfall accompanied with moderate thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur at North Delhi, Central-Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, NCR in the next two hours," the Indian Meteorological Centre (IMD) said in the evening.
The IMD forecasts that rainy conditions will persist until August 5. In addition to Delhi, other areas of the NCR have experienced thunderstorms and light rain.

A woman and her child drowned after falling into a waterlogged drain in the Ghazipur area of East Delhi following heavy rainfall in the national capital.
The deceased were identified as Tanuja (22) and her child, Priyansh (3), residents of Prakash Nagar Khoda Colony, Ghaziabad.
According to police, "A call was received on Wednesday evening at about 8.12 pm regarding a woman and a child drowning in a drain. Based on the information received on Police Response Vehicle (PRV), the force immediately reached the spot."
"On reaching the above incident spot, it was found that Tanuja and her child Priyansh, who were going to the weekly Budh Bazaar held in the Ghazipur Police Station area, East Delhi, fell into a waterlogged semi-constructed drain and drowned," said the police. (ANI)

Terming the offence as "serious", a Delhi court denied bail to an SUV driver for his alleged role in drowning of three civil services aspirants at a reputed coaching centre here, saying the plea was "untenable at this stage".
Judicial Magistrate Vinod Kumar said, "the perusal of the CCTV footage of the alleged incident shows that the accused can be seen driving the said vehicle on an already heavily waterlogged road at such a speed causing large displacement of water as a result of which the gate of the alleged premises gave way and the water went into the basement and consequently three innocent lives have been lost in the said incident."
The magistrate said the video footage "prima facie" showed that Manuj Kathuria was warned by some passersby not to drive fast.
Salwan Station Mayur Vihar in East Delhi observed 119.0 mm rainfall from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM today whereas station NCMRWF, Noida Sector 62 in Gautam Buddha Nagar, UP observed 118.5 mm rainfall, said the IMD in a statement.

Delhi Rains: Students' protest continues amid severe waterlogging in Old Rajinder Nagar over the death of 3 students due to rainwater logging in the basement of a coaching institute on 27 July.
Delhi Rains: The sudden heavy rainfall in Delhi brought down the maximum temperature down to 37.8 degrees Celsius.
On Tuesday, Delhi recorded its highest maximum temperature for the month this year, with the mercury settling at 39.3 degrees Celsius, five notches above the season’s normal.
According to the IMD, the humidity level stood at 63 per cent at 5.30 pm.
The city recorded a minimum temperature of 30.4 degrees Celsius, 3.3 notches above the season’s normal in the morning.
