Delhi rains: Operations at T1 suspended indefinitely; Indigo & SpiceJet flights to operate from THESE Terminals

Delhi rains: Operations at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 have been indefinitely suspended following a Friday morning roof collapse that killed one person and injured six others.

Terminal 1 of the Delhi Airport is primarily used for domestic flights.

"All Indigo and SpiceJet flights departing from and arriving at T1 are being rescheduled till further notice," officials of the Delhi Airport said.

The airport announced that Indigo flights will now operate from T2 and T3, while SpiceJet flights will be redirected to T3.

Closely monitoring the situation, says IndiGo

In a series of tweets, IndiGo said that the airline sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to those whose travel plans have been disrupted due to structural damage to T1 due to the Delhi Airport roof collapse. 

“We assure you that we're all hands-on-deck to assist our customers with either rebooking or processing refunds. We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to update you on subsequent developments. If your travel date is more than 24 hours from now, we request you to contact us at a later time or chat with 6Eskai at https://rb.gy/74xh8c.”

Investigation underway

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said a probe had been started. Experts will be brought in to investigate the collapse of the canopy at the Delhi Airport's T1 terminal.

"We will also bring experts from the department to investigate this. Action will be taken based on the report that will come," the minister told newswire ANI.

DIAL sets up technical panel

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the airport's operator, said it has set up a technical committee to investigate the roof collapse.

"While the cause for the collapse is being assessed, the primary cause seems to be the continued heavy rainfall over the past few hours," it said in a statement.

Minister visits injured

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu visited the injured at AIIMS Hospital. “Spoke to doctors and ensured the best treatment is given. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We are committed to their swift recovery and safety,” Naidu said.

Passengers to receive refund

After the incident, Minister Naidu said that passengers would receive full refunds or have the option to rebook alternative flights and routes.

“We are committed to providing compensation to the family of the deceased and to those injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji is closely monitoring the situation and has assured us of full support. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this unfortunate event.”

Meanwhile, MoS for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said that Terminal 2 & Terminal 3 of the airport will continue to function normally, and all airports will undergo a detailed structural inspection.
