An earthquake Magnitude 5.8 struck Afghanistan on Thursday. Tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir in India. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake hit Afghanistan aroun 4:20 pm on Thursday.

The epicentre of the quake was in Afghanistan at a latitude of 36.49 degrees north and longitude of 71.27 degrees east, at a depth of 165 km.

Officials told news agency PTI that so far there were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property anywhere in the Kashmir Valley.

“EQ of M: 5.8, On: 28/11/2024 16:19:00 IST, Lat: 36.49 N, Long: 71.27 E, Depth: 165 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” the National Center for Seismology posted on X.

Earthquake in Pakistan

Pakistan’s northwestern region was jolted on Thursday by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, but no loss of life or property was reported.

According to the Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 212 kilometres, with its epicentre located near the border area between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Earthquake tremors were felt in Peshawar, North Waziristan, Lower Dir, and Malakand districts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, as well as parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir's Neelum Valley and its suburban areas, according to local officials.

Residents came out of their homes and offices in panic, however, officials said there was no immediate report of casualties or damage.

It was the second earthquake in a month in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Two weeks ago, tremors were felt in Mingora and surrounding areas in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with an initial reported magnitude of 4.1 and a depth of 213 kilometres. Its epicentre was the Afghanistan-Tajikistan region.

The deadliest quake hit the country in 2005 and killed more than 74,000 people.

Pakistan lies in the quake-prone region on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, and is often jolted by tremors.

Large parts of South Asia are seismically active because the Indian tectonic plate is pushing north into the Eurasian plate.
