The government announced on Saturday the appointment of Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has been serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office since January 6, 2023, after initially joining as Under Secretary in 2022.
Hailing from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency since 2014, she secured the 96th rank in the 2013 Civil Services Examination. Before clearing the UPSC exam, she worked as an Assistant Commissioner in Varanasi.
Before joining the PMO, Tewari was part of the Ministry of External Affairs, where she worked in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division. With her expertise in international relations, she played a significant role in the PMO, particularly in the ‘Foreign and Security’ vertical, reporting directly to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, according to media reports.
The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, as per a memorandum issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on March 29, with immediate effect.
