New Delhi: India’s G20 Presidency took a decisive step towards amplifying the voices of the Global South on crucial international issues by hosting a two-day event on international taxation, the finance ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The event, held at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) in Nagpur, was organized in collaboration with the South Centre, a Geneva-based intergovernmental policy research think-tank representing 55 developing countries, including India.

“Under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has strived to champion the concerns and aspirations of the Global South during its G20 Presidency. The focus of this event was to address the pressing tax challenges emerging from the digitalization of the global economy and explore solutions that promote inclusivity and fairness,” the release said.

The centerpiece of the discussions was the historic “Two Pillar Solution” formulated by the OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (IF). The event also included a dedicated workshop on tax treaty negotiations, aimed at strengthening the expertise of Indian tax officials in the field of international taxation, with a specific focus on the Global South perspective.

The Global South includes countries and regions in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Oceania.
