Snowfall today: Fresh snowfall blanketed parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Friday, covering several areas in a thick layer of snow.

Srinagar woke up to a picturesque winter scene, draped in white after overnight precipitation.

A spell of snowfall came in Himachal Pradesh's way too. Lahaul and Spiti were covered in a thick blanket of snow as the area received a fresh spell of heavy snowfall.

Jammu and Kashmir: Heavy snowfall blocks roads

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed for vehicular traffic on Friday due to snowfall and the subsequent accumulation of snow between Ramsoo and Qazigund, officials said.

They added that shooting stones, landslides, and mudslides between Nashri and the NAVYUG Tunnel have also prompted the closure of the highway.

Trucks, passenger vehicles, buses, and several other vehicles have been stopped from faring ahead at Jakhani in Udhampur, and traffic police have prevented them from crossing the area due to the road closure.

Heavy snowfall has been reported in Doda and Bhalesa.

According to an ANI report, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is clearing the snow at the Srinagar airport runway after the area received fresh snowfall today.

Highways closed in Himachal Pradesh amid snowfall

Light to moderate snowfall in high-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh and rainfall in lower altitudes of the state on Thursday closed several roads for vehicles.

Officials said on the day that National Highway 5 (Hindustan Tibet Road) was closed near Narkanda in Shimla district due to slippery conditions following a heavy spell of snow.

Traffic was diverted from Sainj to Shimla via Luhri/Sunni. In total, 12 roads had been closed in the Shimla district.

The weather department also issued an orange warning for Lahaul, Spiti, Chamba, Kinnaur, and areas above 2,300 meters altitude until 5 p.m. on Friday. A threat of an avalanche looms large following fresh snowfalls in the state.
