Alvida Jummah 2025: The month-long fasting Ramadan is in its last week. Muslims in India and beyond are gearing up for Eid-ul-Fitr next week. But before the fasting ends and Eid is celebrated, devouts will participate in special prayers on Alvida Jummah – the last Friday of Ramadan.
Alvida Jummah, also known as Jumat-ul-Wida, marks the last Friday of Ramadan. Friday being more auspicious than any other day for Muslims, Alvida Jummah is basically an occasion of special prayers bidding adieu to the month of fasting.
This year, Ramadan started on March 2. March 28 will be the fourth and last Friday of Ramadan 2025.
Muslims in India and worldwide perform special congregational prayers at mosques. Before the prayers, usually offered at normal Friday congregational prayer times in the afternoon, the clerics deliver sermons focused on Ramadan and Eid.
Muslims offer prayers five times a day including the afternoon prayer called ‘Zuhr’. On Friday, the afternoon prayer is special and called Jummah Namaz. The prayers assume even more significance in Ramadan and so does the Friday prayer in the last week of the month of fasting.
The Jummah prayer in Delhi on March 28, the Jumat-ul-Wida, will start around 12:33 PM, which is the same time as the Zuhr prayer. Since the prayer is preceded by a sermon and a large congregation is expected each mosque fixes a particular time so that everyone can make it,
For Jummah prayer at Jama Masjid in Delhi, sermon starts at around 1 PM and the prayer begins at around 1.30 to 2 pm.
The timing of Friday prayers varies from city to city. Some mosques even keep two congregations to let people pray. The timings are usually between 1 pm and 3 pm.
Muslims give away alms to the deserving, known as Zakat in one of the five pillars of Islam during Ramadan. Muslims also do special night prayers in the last ten days of Ramadan. The special night of prayers is called Lailat-ul- Qadr - the night of power when Muslims believe the Quran was first sent down from theHeaven. Any night in the last ten days of Ramadan can be the Lailat-ul- Qadr.
While some devouts pray on odd nights to seek special blessings in Lailat-ul- Qadr, others celebrate it on the night ahead of 27th day of Ramadan. This year, night after March 27 will be Lailat-ul- Qadr for believers.
This year, Ramadan, or Ramzan – one of the most sacred months in Islam – began on March 2, Sunday, after the crescent moon was sighted on March 1, Saturday.
Ramadan is a 29 -day or 30-day month during which practising Muslims observe Roza, or fasting.
In India, since Ramzan began on March 2, Eid-ul- Fitr will be celebrated on March 31, if the month lasts 29 days. It would be April 1 if the month of Ramadan lasts 30 days.
So, in India, Eid will be celebrated either on March 31 (Monday) or April 1 (Tuesday). Eid-ul-Fitr in India is usually celebrated a day after it is observed in Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia, Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated either on March 30 or March 31.
