Mumbai rains Highlights: Rain to moderate in Mumbai; ‘yellow alert’ for Raigad today

Mumbai rains Highlights: Heavy rainfall in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra disrupted normal life as roads are waterlogged, train services are affected, and flight operations are disrupted.

Mumbai rains Highlights: Heavy rain in Mumbai on Sunday caused waterlogging, long traffic jams, and disruptions to local train services and flight operations. The downpours, which included heavy overnight showers, are expected to continue this week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Mumbai throughout the day on July 8. 

The local weather department reported that heavy rain persisted in Mumbai's Dindoshi early Monday, leading to waterlogging in multiple areas. The IMD has forecasted heavy rain in Maharashtra over three to four days. The MeT department indicated that heavy rain will impact the Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada regions from July 8 to July 10, 2024.

Mumbai rains LIVE update: Locals back on track

Mumbai did not receive much rain overnight on Tuesday though there was heavy downpour in the city and suburbs on Monday evening, as per an update of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The Harbour Line track, on which services were suspended on Monday night between the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Mankhurd due to waterlogging at Wadala, was operationalised at 4.30 am on Tuesday after the water receded, a Central Railway spokesperson said.

"On the Main Line, both fast and slow locals are running 2-3 min behind schedule and the Harbour Line locals are running almost on time now," the spokesperson said.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Monday, the island city recorded an average 141.97 mm rainfall, while the eastern and western parts received 116.61 mm and 142.58 mm rains, respectively, an official said.

Between 8 am and 11 pm on Monday, the island city, eastern and western areas recorded an average rainfall of 116.07 mm, 84.77 mm and 109.55 mm, respectively.

A Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) spokesperson said they operated 15 extra bus services between Panvel and Dadar, Uran and Dadar, and Panvel and Vashi till 11 am for the convenience of passengers as railway services remained suspended.

Central Railway services faced significant disruptions due to rain-induced waterlogging on Monday despite installing high-capacity pumps in low-lying areas, inconveniencing thousands of passengers as local trains stopped on tracks for hours.

Many out-station trains on their way to Mumbai also remained stranded.

The first incident of water-logging was reported between Bhandup and Nahur stations in Mumbai, followed by Sion-Kurla, Chunabhatti, Dadar, and other locations.
