Northeast rains: At least three persons died and six security personnel went missing after a landslide hit a military camp at Chhaten in Sikkim, a defence official said on Monday.

The landslide, which occurred at 7 PM on Sunday, was triggered by heavy rains that have been battering Northeast India, causing floods in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and other states. Home Minister Amit Shah reached out to the CMs of all the states in the wake of the devastating situation.

Three bodies recovered

Three bodies have been recovered, while four individuals were rescued with minor injuries, the defence official said in a statement.

"Rescue teams are working around the clock under challenging conditions to locate the six missing personnel," the defence official told PTI.

Stranded tourists evacuated from Sikkim

Sikkim has been battered by heavy rain in the last few days, stranding as many as 1500 tourists. They are being actively evacuated through a coordinated effort involving the police, residents, forest personnel, and the Lachung Hotel Association.

Swelling waters of the River Teesta damaged key infrastructure in the region, with the Sankalang bamboo bridge—a critical link to the Dzongu constituency—collapsing. The Phidang Bailey Bridge, connecting Mangan to Chungthang also suffered base damage.

Death toll knells at 34

At least 34 people have died in India’s northeastern region following four days of relentless rainfall that triggered severe flooding and landslides, according to officials and media reports cited by Reuters on Monday. The India Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rain in the coming days, raising further concerns.

In Mizoram’s Aizawl district, where torrential rains have led to landslides, mudflows, and rockfalls, authorities have ordered all schools to remain closed on Monday, June 2, to ensure student safety.

In Assam, at least five people have lost their lives due to landslides, state minister Jayanta Mallabaruah confirmed. The Assam government has announced an ex-gratia payment of 4 lakh to the families of the victims.
