Amid rising temperatures, several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Saturday received heavy rains, bringing some respite from heat. However, severe dust storms and hail storms wreaked havoc, causing massive damage to property.
People residing in high-rise buildings suffered huge losses as winds shattered and damaged windows. Incidents of tree collapse have also been reported in some places.
Several users took to social media platforms to share videos to show the extent of damage to cars and houses.
Someone also shared that storm caused significant damage in Jaypee Aman Society Sector 151 Noida, where the Safal outlet in front of Tower 19 was destroyed, and a tree was uprooted, a low-quality building sustained damage, including destruction to doors and balconies.
Few shared the images and videos of dust storm.
The Noida Traffic Police also shared the images of damages caused by the storm.
Delhi, Noida and the national capital region received light rain on Saturday afternoon, reported PTI.
According to the India Meteorological Department, till 3 pm, around 1 mm of rainfall was recorded in the city.
Central Delhi, Maharani Bagh, Mayur Vihar, Ghaziabad, and Noida received light showers after a cloudy morning.
Skies turned grey and parts of the national capital received dust storm, rains and light hailstorm in the afternoon.
The rain along with gusty winds and thunder came as a relief to Delhi residents who have been reeling under the effects of the summer heat over the past week.
Delhi also experienced a similar weather last evening, but it had little to no effect to the weather the following morning as the city suffered a hot weather again until the afternoon rains came.
The IMD predicted a very light rain to light rain accompanied with thunderstorm and lighting and gusty winds in Delhi for Saturday.
The wind speed was predicted to be 30 – 40 kmph, temporarily reaching to 50 kmph during the thunderstorm “with dust rising surface wind towards afternoon/evening,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
In an X post, DD News reported that a thunderstorm with gusty winds is likely all across Delhi in the next two hours.
“As an update to the earlier weather alert on 17/05/2025 at 2:15 PM, a dust storm followed by a thunderstorm with light to moderate rain and lightning is very likely to happen across all of Delhi and NCR in the next 2 hours. Gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 60 km/h are expected,” it said.
