“Medicare, Medicaid — none of that stuff is going to be touched,” Trump said in an interview. “We won’t have to.”

While Trump has consistently vowed to protect Medicare, the public health program for seniors and individuals with disabilities, he has been more open to modifying Medicaid.

The program has become the largest health insurance provider in the US, covering nearly half of all births and about two-thirds of nursing home stays. In 41 states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, it also provides coverage to millions of working-class Americans near the poverty line.
