President Donald Trump vetoed an Israeli proposal in recent weeks to kill Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, two senior US officials told Reuters on Sunday.
“Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do, we’re not even talking about going after the political leadership," said one of the sources, who is a senior U.S. administration official.
According to Reuters, senior Washington officials had been informed by Israel's top brackets about their plan, but it was turned down. However, it was not confirmed whether it was Donald Trump himself who had rejected the idea, or whether he had been informed of the decision in the first place. However, reports suggest that he has been in frequent contact with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu ever since the Israel-Iran conflict began escalating.
After the report on Donald Trump vetoing the plan broke out, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu neither confirmed or denied this. “There are so many false reports of conversations that never happened, and I’m not going to get into that," he was quoted as telling Fox News during an interview.
“But I can tell you, I think that we do what we need to do, we’ll do what we need to do. And I think the United States knows what is good for the United States," Netanyahu continued.
