Iran-Israel conflict: As tensions between Israel and Iran continue to rise, the United States has significantly tightened its travel advisory, warning American citizens against traveling to Israel and surrounding conflict zones. On June 14, the US Department of State authorized the voluntary departure of non-emergency government personnel and their families, citing the region’s “unstable and unpredictable security environment.”
In response to recent security incidents, the US Embassy in Israel has announced that it may impose additional travel restrictions on US government employees and their families without advance notice. These may limit access to sensitive areas, including the Old City of Jerusalem, parts of Israel, and the West Bank.
The updated advisory highlights the persistent threat from terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists, and violent extremists operating across Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.
“Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, and local government facilities,” the Department warned.
Citing the risk of armed conflict, terrorism, and civil unrest, the US has now issued a Do Not Travel alert for multiple high-risk areas:
Israel: US citizens are advised against all travel, including to cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, due to the unpredictable nature of rocket and UAV attacks.
Gaza: The security situation remains extremely dangerous. The U.S. government cannot provide consular services, and key crossings remain closed.
West Bank: Travel is barred due to terrorism and civil unrest. U.S. government personnel must obtain special authorization to enter.
Northern Border Areas: Travel within 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of the Lebanese and Syrian borders is strictly prohibited.
US government employees are under stringent movement restrictions and require embassy approval to travel near Gaza, the Egypt-Israel border, or northern conflict zones.

Travelers are advised to prepare for rapid changes in the security environment, carry emergency supplies, and make contingency plans. The State Department also recommends US citizens traveling to high-risk areas prepare essential legal documents and communicate plans with family members.
