India vs England 1st ODI highlights: Shubman Gill misses hundred in Nagpur, India win by 4 wickets to take 1-0 lead

I knew in advances that I could get a promotion because of left-right combo. We tried to bowl spin in the powerplay but it was coming nicely onto the bat at that point. We just wanted to bowl in the right areas. Pitch had something in it for the bowlers. I felt they varied their pace well and got turn. If we had done that as well we could have got more turn. We were trying to take calculative assaults (in the partnership with Gill).

Ravindra Jadeja hits a couple of fours off Saqib Mahmood and India win the game by four wickets. India reach the target in 38.4 overs. 

Saqib Mahmood comes to bowl and Shubman Gill dances down the track to hit a glorious cover drive to the boundary. OUTTT!!! In the next ball, Gill gives himself room and pulls a short delivery but Jos Buttler takes a brilliant diving catch to end his innings. Gill walks back for 87. IND 235/6 (36.2)

Soft dismissal. KL Rahul hits straight at the hands of Adil Rashid. The Indian can't believe it. Hardik Pandya finishes the over with a six. IND 231/5 (36)

Through the GATES!!! Adil Rashid gets the better of Axar Patel with a beauty of a delivery. The left-hander got beaten by the flight as it tossed up wide and takes a sharp turn on to the stumps. Axar goes for 52. IND 221/4 (33.4)

India are just 29 runs away from victory and take a 1-0 series lead against England. Remind you, India still have the likes of Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja waiting to come and bat.

It was my dream. I prepared myself for this and put in the hard yards. I didn't hit the right lengths initially but got the rewards once I corrected them. They were looking to make some room (the batters), that's the reason I kept bowling on the stumps. It's a slightly two-paced pitch. Some of them are coming on nicely, some are stopping a bit. We bounced back in style. It's a good total and we can chase this down.

OUTTTT!!! Ravindra Jadeja strikes as Jacob Bethell departs. Another English wicket goes down at a very wrong time. The ball was spinning down the leg side. Bethell, trying to slog sweep, misses the line as the ball hits the back thigh. The umpire remains unmoved and Rohit Sharma goes upstairs. TV replays show Bethell is out.  ENG 220/8 (43)

Jacob Bethell reaches his second fifty in ODIs with a single off Mohammed Shami. At 21 years and 106 days, Bethell becomes the youngest England batter to hit a fifty in India bettering Joe Root (at 22y 24d) when he scored 57 not out in Mohali in 2013. ENG ENG 218/7 (42)

Mohammed Shami is back into the attack. Notably, this is the first time Shami is bowling in ODIs after ODI World Cup final in 2023. So far, Shami has been economical in his five overs, conceding just 20 runs without any wickets. India have tightened the noose against England. ENG 135/4 (24)

Another wicket for Harshit Rana in the over as Harry Brook is caught off guard by the extra bounce. Trying to nudge a short delivery, Brook edges it to keeper KL Rahul. After a flurry of boundaries, England lose three wickets in just eight balls. Brook goes for a duck.

India get the first breakthrough in the 9th over as Phil Salt becomes victim of a horrible mix-up with Ben Duckett. Salt goes for 41. Joe Root comes in the middle. Notably, Root made his international debut on this very ground in 2012. ENG 75/1 (9)

It's a red soil pitch in Nagpur and looks to be a good batting track. The pitch is hard and has a bit of gras in it and dry with no moisture. Spin could come into play later on. The captain winning the toss would like to bowl first.

India have added Varun Chakaravarthy after his 14 wickets against England in the T20Is, keeping the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in mind. It will be interesting to see whether he makes his debut. Also in the mix is Kuldeep Yadav, who also comes after a injury layoff.

Jasprit Bumrah has been sidelined from the ODI series due to a back injury that he suffered during the fifth Test in BGT last month. India captain Rohit Sharma gave an update on Bumrah. “Jasprit, we are waiting on some update about his scans and stuff, which was due to happen in some days. Once we get that scan, we will be able to give you more clarity on where he stands right now,” Rohit said.
