Vinesh Phogat was all set to compete for Gold at the Paris Olympics 2024 in the Women's Wrestling 50 kg category. She had already secured a Silver for India. In a shocking reversal of fortunes, Phogat will now return from Paris without any medal after being found overweight ahead of her women's 50kg final.
“She was found overweight by 100gm this morning. The rules do not allow this and she has been disqualified," an Indian coach told PTI.
"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the women's Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning," the IOA stated.

Uproar over Phogat issue in RS: Following the continuous uproar from the opposition benches who were raising the Vinesh Phogat disqualification, Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar on Thursday convened a meeting of the floor leaders in both Houses of the Parliament.
He was of the the opinion that the 'scene' created in the House was 'unprecedented, indigestible'. "It is our bounden duty to take tough decisions. Sublimity has been misunderstood as fragility, persuasion has been misunderstood as weakness," he added.

The uneasy relations between Rajya Sabha Chairman and Opposition parties once again surfaced on Thursday, as Jagdeep Dhankhar left the House after heated clashes with TMC leader and some other Opposition MPs who were not permitted to raise the issue of disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics.
Trouble started in the morning session when Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge sought to raise the Phogat disqualification issue but Chairman Dhankhar did not allow it. This followed an angry exchange between the Chair and TMC leader Derek O'Brien. (PTI)

Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Haryana minister Moolchand Sharma on Thursday said that Vinesh Phogat is the pride for the state and the country and there should be no politicisation of her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024.
"Vinesh Phogat is the pride of the state and country. We all are deeply pained because of her disqualification. Our daughter Vinesh Phogat will get justice. An anguished Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar left the House for some time during the morning session on Thursday, following an uproar and walkout by Opposition party members, who were not allowed to raise the issue related to the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Olympics.
Soon after the listed papers were tabled in the House, Leader of Opposition and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stood up to raise the Phogat disqualification issue and wanted to know "who is behind" it.
However, Dhankhar did not allow Kharge to raise the issue. (PTI)

Following his niece Vinesh Phogat's retirement from wrestling, Indian wrestling legend Mahavir Phogat said that it was natural to arrive at this decision after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics, and also said that once she is back home, the family will try to convince her to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

We demand the PM to take cognisance of it and put pressure on the Olympic organisation. It's our right and she is the daughter of the country. The Silver medal is her right, we appeal to the PM to do the needful so that she can get the Silver medal...We have not spoken to her yet but once she is here we will try to convince her to come out (of retirement) and prepare for Gold for the country."
“Olympic Gold medal was confirmed this time but she got disqualified. It hurts and hence she has decided this. Once she is back, we all will try to make her understand if she is ready to contest in the next Olympics," says Vinesh Phogat's uncle Mahavir Phogat on her retirement.

In a social media announcement, the 29-year-old wrestler, who was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight just before Wednesday's gold medal match, declared her retirement. She expressed remorse and sought forgiveness from all who had supported her throughout her career.
In a post on X, Punia wrote, “Vinesh, aap haari nahi, haaraaya gaya hai (Vinesh, you haven't lost; you have been defeated. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday said that Vinesh Phogat will be welcomed and felicitated like an Olympic medal winner and all respect, rewards and facilities that the state government gives to Olympic silver medalists "will be gratefully given to Vinesh Phogat as well."
Taking to social media platform X, the Haryana Chief Minister wrote, "Our brave daughter of Haryana, Vinesh Phogat, performed brilliantly and entered the finals of the Olympics. Due to some reasons, she may not have been able to play the final of the Olympics but she is a champion for all of us.

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following her disqualification from the 50 kg category final at the Paris Olympics.
Phogat, who was set to compete against the United States' Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the gold medal, was disqualified on Wednesday for breaching the weight limit.
According to ANI citing IOA sources, Phogat has requested the CAS to award her the silver medal. The verdict is expected on Thursday morning.
"Vinesh Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her disqualification, asking for the silver medal. CAS will give its verdict tomorrow morning," the source told ANI. (ANI)
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment over Phogat's disqualification. She confirmed that while Phogat is physically and medically fine, she is disappointed. Usha noted that the support staff is actively working to help Phogat manage her weight.
"After hearing the news that Vinesh Phogat is disqualified, I am shocked and disappointed. I had come here to meet Vinesh; she is physically and medically okay. Mentally, she is disappointed. Our support staff is with her, trying their best to help her reduce weight," PT Usha said. (PTI)
