UNION BUDGET 2024: WHAT TO EXPECT

The union government will present its interim budget in Parliament this week. This will be the last budget of the 17th Lok Sabha before the country goes to polls in April-May 2024. The interim budget will mainly work as a vote-on-account and is not meant to propose any major changes in the tax structure, nor announce any major policy initiative. Strictly speaking the interim budget’s pre-electoral nature necessitates that it focus on keeping the government’s existing measures and policies funded until the new government takes charge and presents a fresh budget in June this year. However, some analysts believe this interim budget could be a platform for the government to announce a few electoral sweeteners or populist measures. In line with this, the government is believed to be focussing on welfare schemes for five key sections of society—women, poor, youth, farmers and tribals. The Indian Railways is also expected to receive a record allocation in the upcoming interim budget, with capital expenditure likely to see a surge of 25 percent.
