What is the case?

Cubbon Park police have registered a suo-moto case against Virat Kohli-owned establishment ‘One 8 Commune’ for violations under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), it added.

The pub has been booked under Sections 4 and 21 of COTPA for not having a designated zone within the restaurant for smoking, the report said.

Not the first time…

This is not the first time that the Virat Kohli-owned pub and restaurant is facing action.

  • In June 2024, One 8 Commune was slapped with an FIR for operating beyond the stipulated time.

According to a report by News18, the Cubbon Park noted that the pub, situated at the top floor of Ratnam complex on Kasturba Road, was buzzing even after 1 am. “The One8 Commune pub at Kasturba Road was found serving customers at 1.20 am on July 6, which is beyond the closing time,” the FIR stated.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the pub was found operating beyond permitted hours during police night patrols. Notably, pubs in Bengaluru can serve customers until 1 am, and they are supposed to stop operations after 1 am, it added.

  • Later, in December 2024, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had also issued a notice to the restaurant for not obtaining an no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Fire Department, for operations.

The notice came after a social activist lodged a complaint, causing the Shantinagar BBMP officials to act. Despite an earlier notice, the pub failed to respond, which had led to the BBMP issuing a warning about legal action, as per the HT report.
