Worli, Maharashtra Election 2024: In a close battle in Worli, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray claimed victory for a second straight term in the constituency and defeated Shiv Sena leader Milind Deora by a margin of 8,801 votes. Aaditya and Deora scored 63,324 and 54,523 votes, respectively.
Overall, Maharashtra was coloured a vivid saffron on Saturday, with voters giving the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance a landslide win over a tottering MVA while the opposition INDIA bloc looked set to return to power in Jharkhand. As votes were counted for the assembly elections in the two states, the BJP celebrated, poised to win 125 of the 149 seats it contested in the powerhouse state of Maharashtra.
Together with its partners Shiv Sena and NCP, the ruling Mahayuti alliance could win 219 of the 288 seats in the state, leaving the Congress-Shiv Sena(UBT)-NCP(SP) tie-up with just 51 seats.
In the ruling Mahayuti alliance, the BJP contested 149 assembly seats, the Shiv Sena 81 seats, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP in 59 constituencies. In the MVA combine, the Congress fielded 101 candidates, Shiv Sena(UBT) 95 and the NCP(SP) 86.
The youth leader, Aaditya Thackeray sought re-election from Worli in the Maharashtra assembly elections 2024, where he was pitted against Rajya Sabha MP and leader of ruling Shiv Sena Milind Deora and Sandeep Deshpande of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Thackeray faced a formidable challenge from Deora, a familiar face in the prestigious constituency.
Milind Deora, a 47-year-old former Union minister, quit the Congress in January this year and joined the Shiv Sena. He has twice represented the South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat, which covers Worli, in the past. As the campaign ended on Monday, Aaditya Thackeray capped his canvassing with a road show alongside his mother Rashmi. Deora, too, held a roadshow on the last day.
The constituency saw Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who heads the ruling Shiv Sena, his Telangana counterpart A Revanth Reddy of the Congress and MNS chief Raj Thackeray seeking votes for their respective candidates. The Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT) are part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) along with the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar).
