India-Pakistan Ceasefire: The borders along northern and western fronts of the country remained relatively calm on Sunday, after days of air sirens and blackouts. This after four days of firings and drone attacks along borders and inside cities in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The Army said that no incident of firing was reported from the Line of Control, news agency PTI reported. This comes after explosions were heard in Srinagar and border areas of Punjab and Rajasthan just hours after the ceasefire between the two countries was announced on Saturday.
Life returned to normalcy across the region and it was business as usual after India and Pakistan halted military action though a bilateral ‘understanding’.
"The night remained largely peaceful in Jammu and Kashmir and other areas along the international border. No incident has been reported, marking the first calm night in recent days," Indian Army said on Monday.
As many as 20 people were killed while many others were inured during the cross-border shelling since May 7, when India conducted strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan two weeks after the brutal killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam last month. The strikes by India since 7 May were coined ‘Operation Sindoor.’
Lieutenant General Rajeev Ghai, Director General Military Operations (DGMO), will hold a talk with his Pakistani counterpart at 12 noon today. This is the second time that the DGMOs of both countries will hold talks.
On 11 May, after days of conflict, a bilateral ‘understanding’ was confirmed by both India's Ministry of External Affairs and the foreign ministry in Pakistan. But hours after the annoucement, Pakistan violated the ‘understanding’ through some cross-border shelling in Jammu's Udhampur on Saturday. The same night, Drones and sirens were reported from Srinagar and other cities of Jammu and Kashmir too.
But the blazing guns fell silent soon after, and the truce held for the remainder of the night. Throughout Sunday night too, there were no violations.
Peace is also returning to other border villages with residents along the Line of Control, who had fled to safer ground, returning to their homes. Some of the houses in Uri, in north Kashmir, were damaged in artillery fire. But no firing was reported along the borders on Sunday night too.
Srinagar was normal as usual throughout the day on Sunday, a day after explosions ranging through parts of the city created panic among residents. There was no blackout on Sunday, unlike the past two evenings – Thursday and Friday – in Srinagar.
With drone activity spotted in Rajasthan's Barmer on Sunday night again, the district administration has ordered a complete blackout.
Earlier in the day, blackout was imposed in Jaisalmer, Barmer and other border areas in Rajasthan as a precautionary measure in the wake of Saturday's ceasefire violation by Pakistan.
No ceasefire violations or drone activities were reported from anywhere in Punjab too.
