There was a possibility that grappler Reetika Hooda might compete for bronze only if Kyrgyzstani wrestler Aiperi Medet Kyzy reaches final.
Earlier, Reetika proceeded to quarterfinal while facing Hungarian wrestler Bernadett Nagy match in the Round of 16 in the Women 76kg Freestyle category at Paris Olympics 2024. She won the match on technical superiority. She defeated Hungarian wrestler Bernadett Nagy 10-2 by technical superiority.
In the meantime, the ad hoc division of CAS Vinesh Phogat's appeal against disqualification from Olympic finals has extended time till 6.00 pm on 11 August 11.
"The ad hoc division of CAS has extended time till 6:00 p.m. on August 11, 2024, for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling & the International Olympic Committee to issue a decision. The reasoned order will be issued at a later date," ANI quoted IOA as saying.
On August 9, Wrestler Aman Sehrawat defeated Puerto Rico's Darian Toi Cruz in Men’s freestyle 57kg category to bring India's 5th bronze medal. This is also the first wrestling medal for India in the Paris Olympics 2024. With this, India's medal tally rose to 6, including 5 bronze and one silver.
Also, the Indian athletics campaign ended as the men's 4x400 m relay race team fell just short of reaching the medal round and finished fifth and 11th overall in the qualification round on Friday.
Among other details, the Court of Arbitration for Sports on 9 August said that the decision on Vinesh Phogat's plea against her disqualification over weight issues is expected to be issued before the end of the Olympic Games.
Earlier on 8 August, Neeraj Chopra surpassed his gold-medal throw from Tokyo but missed out on a second consecutive top finish due to an exceptional performance by Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem. The Indian men's hockey team gave PR Sreejesh a storybook ending to his career. He said, as PTI quoted, "Winning the Gold medal, I feel, gets decided on the match day only. Sometimes, the person who deserves to win a Gold doesn't win it. Staying fit and avoiding injuries was my main concern. I feel the result has been good, and I have won a medal for second consecutive time."
Speaking regarding a query on his surgery, he said: "I will discuss about it with my coach and physio. Right now, I will focus on competitions in the near future, and then take a call."

He said, as quoted by ANI, "If you ask generally of having two silver medals in one category then my answer is no. There are the regulations of the International Federation that have to be followed and the International Federation, United World Wrestling was taking this decision...Looking at the federation or everybody who has to make such a decision then when and where do you make the cut? Do you say with 100 grams we give it, but with 102 grams we don't give it anymore?... Now it's in CAS, we will in the end follow the CAS decision. But again, the International Federation, they have to apply and interpret their rules. So this is their responsibility."
Paris Olympics 2024 LIVE: Addressing a press conference on 9 August, International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach said that IOC will not organise boxing in LA without a reliable partner.
He said, as quoted by ANI, "...The IOC will not organise boxing in LA without a reliable partner. If these national federations want their athletes to win Olympic medals, they need to organise themselves in a reliable international federation with good governance and respect all the requirements..."
Paris Olympics 2024 LIVE: Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh on 9 August said that the camaraderie between Indian superstar Neeraj Chopra and Pakistani javelin ace Arshad Nadeem clearly shows that sport transcends borders and unites people.
"We have seen some good pictures where Neeraj and Nadeem after the ceremony, they were talking with each other... with both of them holding their own flags and respecting each other as a sportsperson. That's what shows that sports is beyond any boundaries and sports unites everyone, so great message by both of them," Harbhajan said.

Paris Olympics 2024 LIVE: Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday rejected a notice by AITC member Mohammed Nadimul Haque who sought discussion on wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification at the Paris Olympics.
Dhankhar said he had received a notice under Rule 267 from Haque on the issue.
"I tried to reach you. My office got in touch with you. You expressed your helplessness. I have talked to your leader. Please get in touch with him. For a change, I am doing it in the House," the chairman said.

He said, as quoted by PTI, “When a player plays, they sacrifice everything to win for their country. Sometimes things happen like Vinesh was a contender for gold but because of a rule, she was held back. This happens with many athletes. No doubt that Vinesh is one of world’s best wrestler in her weight category, so her retiring is a big setback for me. I have seen her grown up. Paris Olympics 2024 LIVE: The Indian Olympic Association on 9 August announced the nomination of hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh as the joint flagbearer with pistol shooter Manu Bhaker at the Closing Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Following Neeraj Chopra's silver, India has earned 5 medals at the Paris Olympics, so far this year. Manu Bhaker won 2 bronze medals, while Mandeep Singh and PR Sreejesh won one bronze medal each.
