INDIAN INFERNO: HEATWAVE HAMMERS COUNTRY'S HEARTLANDS

Most of the country is struggling with a severe heatwave. The scorching sun has been draining the life out of people across the country. The Indian Meteorological Department announced a severe heatwave in April, which has continued well into May. Central, North and Peninsular India has borne the brunt of it. The worst hit were Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Even places like Kerala and Sikkim which were outside the heatwave zone are experiencing it. On 29 May, the temperature in Delhi climbed above 50°C. However, Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijuju later said this was “not official yet" and described such a high temperature as “very unlikely" while asking the weather office to verify the report.
