PremiumMarket Close Highlights : U.S. government bond yields pushed to a near four-week peak on Wednesday, lifting their global counterparts and pressuring stocks, as data sowed new doubts about the timing and extent of Federal Reserve rate cuts.
Meanwhile, crude oil rose for a fourth day to reach a one-month high amid speculation OPEC will maintain production cuts at a meeting this Sunday and renewed geopolitical tensions.
U.S. yields climbed after consumer confidence data came in stronger than expected on Tuesday, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said further rate hikes were still a possibility, and two Treasury auctions were poorly received by investors.
The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose as high as 4.576%, a level not seen since May 3, and was last up 2 basis points at 4.566%. Yields move inversely to prices.
Germany's 10-year bond yield rose to 2.637%, the highest in a month, and was last at 2.609%. Meanwhile, equivalent Japanese yields hit the highest since December 2011 at 1.081% on expectations that the Bank of Japan could soon raise interest rates again.
"These expectations of Fed rate cuts have been pared back," said Aneeka Gupta, director of macroeconomic research at WisdomTree. "Overnight we had Neel Kashkari mention that we still can't take the possibility of a rate hike in 2024 off the table."
The sharp improvement in a U.S. consumer confidence measure for May has kept the market guessing about the strength of the economy and sticky inflationary pressures, which in turn cloud the outlook for the Fed's policy path.
Traders currently put the odds of at least a quarter-point interest rate cut by September at around 44% following the data, from a coin toss a day earlier, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool.
European equities opened lower, with the continent-wide STOXX 600 index falling for a second day, by 0.4%. Britain's FTSE 100 was down 0.22% and Germany's DAX was 0.44% lower.
U.S. stock futures were also in the red, with S&P 500 contracts 0.48% down and Nasdaq contracts off by 0.56%.
Gupta said the release of U.S. personal consumption expenditure inflation data on Friday will be an important guide for Fed policy. Economists expect PCE inflation - the Fed's preferred measure - held steady at 2.7% in April from the same level in March.
"If we get a slight slowdown come in on Friday that would definitely cement the possibility of a rate cut coming to fruition for September," Gupta said.
Before that, German inflation data for May is due later on Wednesday ahead of the euro zone-wide reading on Friday.
The dollar rose to a four-week peak of 157.4 yen on Wednesday, boosted by higher U.S. bond yields. It was last up about 0.2% against the euro at $1.0839.
In energy markets, Brent crude oil futures for July delivery rose 0.65% to $84.78 a barrel, the highest since May 1, while U.S. crude futures climbed 0.74% to $80.42.
Oil prices gained more than $1 a barrel on Tuesday on the expectation that OPEC will maintain crude supply curbs at its June 2 meeting, while the start of U.S. summer driving season and Israel's assault on Rafah, next to the Egyptian border, has added to geopolitical tensions.
Mainland Chinese blue chip stocks edged 0.12% higher after the IMF upgraded its economic growth forecasts for the country.

Six stocks, Power Grid Corp., Nestle India, Sun Pharma, ITC, IndusInd Bank, and Bharti Airtel, out of the 30 on the BSE Sensex closed in the green, while Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and UltraTech Cement, were the top drags for the day.
On the Nifty 50, 13 out of the 50 stocks closed in the green. Hindalco Industries, Divi's Laboratories, Power Grid Corp., Bajaj Auto, and Cipla, were the top performers, while HDFC Life, SBI Life, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consumer Products, and Bajaj Finserv were the top losers.
The broader market closed on a mixed note, with the BSE MidCap down 0.38% and the BSE SmallCap up 0.23%. Meanwhile, across sectors, the bank, financial services, oil & gas and IT indices were the top drags, all three closing down more than 1%, followed by FMCG, auto and consumer durables indices. Among the gainers for the day were pharma, healthcare, metal and media indices.
In corporate news, Alkem Laboratories reported revenue from operations at ₹2,935.8 crore compared to ₹2,902.6 crore in the year ago periodm while its net profit stood at ₹304.5 crore, up 350% YoY compared to ₹67.7 crore in the year ago period.
Samvardhana Motherson International reported total consolidated Q4 revenue from operations at ₹25,643.89 crore, compared to ₹22,516.99 crore in the year ago period, while its profit for the period stood at ₹633.30 crore, down 9.41% YoY compared to ₹699.10 crore in the year ago period. The company's board also approved raising ₹5,000 crore through private placement of redeemable NCD, and declared a dividend of ₹0.80 per equity share. Shares of the company closed 4.24% higher at ₹148.
HeidelbergCement reported Q4 revenue from operations at ₹610.4 crore, marginally down from ₹615.5 crore in the year ago period, while its Q4 net profit stood at ₹48.2 crore, a 37.7% YoY increase compared to ₹35 crore in the year ago period.

Sensex Today Live : According to recent data from the Reserve Bank of India, foreign direct investment (FDI) in India has plummeted to its lowest level since 2007. The net FDI for the fiscal year 2023-24 was recorded at $10.6 billion, marking a significant 62.17% drop from the previous year’s $28 billion.
This decline is largely attributed to an increase in repatriation through block deals and disinvestment. From the total gross inflow of $71 billion, over half, approximately $44.4 billion, was repatriated via dividends, share sales, or disinvestment. Per management’s positive outlook, demand from customers seem to have hit a trough in both domestic and export markets. The GenAI bot is aimed at streamlining and simplifying service instructions for users and significantly shorten complex asset maintenance processes in SAP S/4HANA.
The company said it will launch a GenAI bot to kickstart the AI integration on iMRO/4.
In the next phase, the GenAI-infused iMRO/4 will enable a comprehensive natural language inspection and repair findings report based on operative data within SAP S/4HANA, the company explained.

Management guided to 30+ new stores in FY25, incl. 14 in the NCR. It further guided to a 15% gross margin; the EBITDA margin would be a stable ~7% due to higher investments. Our FY25e/26e revenues are largely unchanged, while EBITDA is 3% lower on average each year.
We are positive regarding the company, given its strong position in the core markets of AP and Telangana, continuous penetration in the NCR, higher cashflow generation and healthy return ratios.
We retain our Buy, at a lower 12-mth ₹268 TP, 35x FY26e P/E (earlier ₹279, 33x FY26e P/E).

Subject to IWL’s Board approval and other requisite regulatory approvals, the funds raised are proposed to be infused into Inox Wind Ltd to pare down Inox Wind's debt and augment the working capital needs of the company thereby strengthening its balance sheet further".
Sensex Today Live : Suzlon Group today announced a new order win for the development of 551.25 MW wind power project for the Aditya Birla Group.
Suzlon will install 175 wind turbine generators (WTGs) with a Hybrid Lattice Tubular (HLT) tower and a rated capacity of 3.15 MW each at sites in the Barmer district in Rajasthan and Bhuj district in Gujarat, the company said in an exchange filing.
This order is for the company's larger rated 3.15 MW, S144‐140m turbines from the 3 MW product series. As part of the agreement, Suzlon will supply the wind turbines (equipment supply) and execute the project, including erection and commissioning, in Rajasthan, while they will supply, supervise, and commission the project in Gujarat, it added.
Suzlon will also undertake comprehensive operations and maintenance services post‐commissioning at both the sites.
