Myanmar earthquake update: Myanmar’s Meteorological Department said Sunday's quake occurred in the area of Wundwin township, 97 kilometers (60 miles) south of Mandalay, at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles). The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the depth at 7.7 km (4.8 miles).
Several Southeast Asian countries kicked off their annual water festival holiday on Sunday, but in the wake of a devastating earthquake last month, Myanmar is missing out on the fun. Myanmar is struggling to recover from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28 that devastated its central heartland, killing more than 3,600 people and leveling structures from new condos to ancient pagodas.

The Embassy of India in Myanmar stated that Ambassador Abhay Thakur handed over 15 tonnes of rice, cooking oil, and foodstuff to a local community relief group. The Consulate General of India in Mandalay similarly contributed by providing a generator set, water purifier, and cooking oil to the Ambika temple kitchen, which is currently serving meals to 4,000 people daily.
No loss of life and property was reported from any part of the state so far, officials said. The Mandi district falls under seismic zone 5, which is a high-damage risk zone.
In response to a formal request from the Government of Myanmar, a specialist team of Indian Army Engineers arrived in the country on 6 April 2025 under Operation Brahma, further reaffirming India's ongoing commitment to regional support and humanitarian relief. The deployment marks a crucial phase in India's continued efforts to support Myanmar following the deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the nation on March 28.
An earthquake of magnitude 5.79 struck Papua New Guinea earlier on Sunday, hitting at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), the German Research Centre for Geosciences said.
The earthquake that struck Mandi in Himachal Pradesh earlier today was only 5 kilometres deep. Shallow earthquakes are more dangerous than deeper ones due to their greater energy release closer to the Earth's surface. This causes stronger ground shaking and increased damage to structures and casualties, compared to deeper earthquakes, which lose energy as they travel to the surface.
On Saturday, a moderate intensity earthquake with epicentre in Pakistan struck Jammu and Kashmir at around 1 pm. Tremors were felt in many parts of the Valley, but there were are no reports of loss of life or damage to property
Tajikistan experienced two earthquakes, with the first measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale and the second 3.9 on the Richter Scale, according to the National Centre for Seismology. Both quakes occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, making aftershocks likely.
According to the US Geological Survey, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Simeulue Regency, located in Indonesia's Maluku on April 13. The quake was reported around 11:09 AM.
Strong tremors of 6.1 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Tajikistan on Saturday, April 13. The tremors were felt at 9:54 AM in Tajikistan and surrounding areas. The seismic activity occurred at a depth of 10 km.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) provided an update on the seismic activity and in a post on X stated, “EQ of M: 6.1, On: 13/04/2025 09:54:02 IST, Lat: 38.86 N, Long: 70.61 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tajikistan.”
Furthermore, powerful aftershocks were also reported in Tajikistan. NCS in another post on X suggested that magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted Tajikistan within an hour after the tremors of first seismic activity were felt. The second quake occurred at 10:36 AM on April 13.

Himachal Pradesh's Mandi also experienced seismic activity at 9:18 AM when 3.4 magnitude temblor jolted the town.
“EQ of M: 3.4, On: 13/04/2025 9:18:25 IST, Lat: 31.49 N, Long: 76.94 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Mandi, Himachal Pradesh,” the NCS stated.
Tajikistan and Indonesia were not the only regions where powerful seismic activity was felt on Sunday morning. Another 5.5 magnitude earthquake jolted Myanmar's Meiktila city, US Geological Survey said.
According to NCS, the small city in central Myanmar witnessed an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale at 7:54 AM. This marks one of the biggest aftershocks since March 28 devastating and powerful earthquake. A massive 7.7 magnitude temblor jolted the country's central region previously that caused significant damage to life and property.
“EQ of M: 5.1, On: 13/04/2025 07:54:58 IST, Lat: 21.13 N, Long: 96.08 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar,” the NCS said.
No major damage or casualties was reported in the latest seismic activity, whose epicentre was roughly hallway between Mandalay and Naypyitaw cities - the former is second-biggest city of Myanmar while the latter is the capital.
