A 15-year-old Kerala boy took his own life this month following “brutal ragging, bullying, and physical assault” from his classmates. Details outlined by his mother indicate that Mihir Ahammed had endured severe abuse because of his skin colour — being “forced to lick toilet seats” and having his “head shoved into the toilet while it was flushed”.
“Mihir was beaten, verbally abused, and forced to endure unimaginable humiliation even on his last day. He was forcibly taken to the washroom, made to lick a toilet seat, and had his head pushed into the toilet while it was flushed. These acts of cruelty broke him in ways we cannot fathom,” Rajna PM wrote in a social media statement.
An FIR has been filed in connection with the case and his mother has also submitted a petition to the Child Commission seeking a probe into the alleged attacks.
The teenager had jumped from his 26th storey home in Kochi on January 15 — about an hour after returning home from school. Ahammed had been a student of the Global Public School in the Thiruvaniyoor area of Ernakulam at the time of his death. A petition submitted by his mother also seeks to investigate alleged mistreatment by the Vice Principal of his previous school — GEMS Kochi.
Ahammed's parents had begun gathering information in the days following his death to better understand his motivations and found a horrific trail of abuse from a "gang of students at school and on the school bus".
“He was bullied for his skin colour. They didn't end the cruelty even after his death. A shocking chat screenshot reveals the extent of their cruelty. They messaged ‘f**k ni**a he actually died’ and celebrated his death,” his mother added.
Rajna PM also accused the school authorities of colluding to cover up the incident — noting that they had done little to address the matter. She claimed that an Instagram page seeking justice for Mihir had also been deleted days after it was created by his friends.
“There are reports that the school is intimidating students to suppress the truth. When I approached the school authorities with evidence and demanded accountability, they only informed me that the information was forwarded to the police. I strongly believe they are attempting to cover up these incidents to protect the school's reputation,” she alleged.
