The Union government on 29 May notifed the appointment of three new judges to the Supreme Court, following the President’s assent to the collegium’s recommendations.
The new appointments are NV Anjaria, Chief Justice, High Court of Karnataka, Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice, High Court of Gauhati and AS Chandurkar, Judge, High Court of Bombay as Judges of the Supreme Court of India, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced.
With their appointments, the Supreme Court will reach its sanctioned strength of 34 judges.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint S/Shri Justices (i) NV Anjaria, Chief Justice, High Court of Karnataka, (ii) Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice, High Court of Gauhati and (iii) AS Chandurkar, Judge, High Court of Bombay as Judges of the Supreme Court of India,” Meghwal said in a post on X.
The five-member collegium headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai decided to recommend the three names as against the three existing vacancies of judges in the top court following the superannuation of ex-CJI Sanjiv Khanna, and Justices Abhay S Oka and Hrishikesh Roy.
The collegium to appoint new judges comprises the five seniormost judges in the top court. The judges are expected to be sworn in by Chief Justice of India Bhushan R Gavai on 30 May morning.
The collegium had recommended the elevation of the three judges In its meeting on 26 May, 2025.
1- Justice NV Anjaria: Born on 23 March, 1965 in Ahmedabad; Justice N V Anjaria comes from the family of lawyers. His father was also in judiciary.
Justice Anjaria graduated from HL College of Commerce, Ahmedabad, did LL.B from Sir LA Shah Law College in 1988 and obtained Masters Degree in Law in 1989 from University School of Law, Ahmedabad.
Justice Anjaria started practice in the High Court of Gujarat from August 1988. He has served as a Senior Panel Counsel for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Senior Standing Counsel for BSNL, Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Counsel for Technical Education (AICTE), National Counsel for Teacher Education (NCTE).
He was elevated as Additional Judge, High Court of Gujarat on 21 November 2011 and confirmed as permanent Judge on 6, September 2013. He took oath as Chief Justice of High Court of Karnataka on 25, February 2024.
2 - Justice Vijay Bishnoi: Born on 26 March, 1964 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Justice Vijay Bishnoi enrolled as an advocate in July, 1989. He practiced at the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal at Jodhpur and served as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel during the years 2000-2004.
Justice Bishnoi was appointed as Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court in January, 2013 and took oath as a Permanent Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on 7 January 2015. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and took oath as the Chief Justice, Gauhati High Court on 5 February, 2024.
3 - Justice AS Chandurkar: Born on 7 April 1965, Justice AS Chandurkar completed schooling at St Vincents' High School, Pune. He graduated from Ness Wadia College, Pune and also ILS Law College, Pune.
Justice AS Chandurkar joined the Bar on 21 July 1988 and began practice in Mumbai. He shifted to Nagpur in 1992 and practised in various Courts. He was elevated as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 21 June 2013.
