Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will brief the Shashi Tharoor-led parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs regarding the current situation with Pakistan on May 19, PTI reported.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor told PTI that the Foreign Secretary will inform the committee about the current developments after the India and Pakistan agreed to halt military actions following Operation Sindoor.
Misri has often briefed the parliamentary panel on several foreign affairs issues, such as developments in India's neighbourhood and its ties with Canada.
Amid the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Misri emerged as an important figure, helming the Indian government's press briefings. The top Indian diplomat, who has been at the forefront amid the “combat-like situation”, recently received Shashi Tharoor's support after he became the target of social media trolls after India and Pakistan reached an agreement to stop military strikes.
Tharoor told NDTV, “I can't understand who on earth would troll and why? What could they be critical of, and what could these people have done differently or better?”
The parliamentary panel briefing comes after an 'understanding’ between India and Pakistan was reached after talks between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOS) of both countries following Operation Sindoor.
Tensions between India and Pakistan heightened after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in reply to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed 26 lives.
Under Operation Sindoor, the Indian Armed Forces, in a joint military action, struck missiles at nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pok. As a retaliatory measure, Pakistan launched multiple unprovoked escalations using artillery guns and drones.
Following a series of cross-firing and shelling between India and Pakistan along the border, Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar on May 10 stated, “India and Pakistan have today (Saturday) worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action."
Misri confirmed that Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted India on Saturday and agreed to halt all military actions on land, at sea, and in the air.
