After rain knocked defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) out of Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs contention, it could once again come to haunt on Wednesday when Mumbai Indians host Delhi Capitals in a crucial encounter at the Wankhede Stadium.
With Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings already qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs, the result of MI vs DC clash could decide the fourth team in the knockouts.
However, inclement weather in Mumbai may impact the clash. The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday evening issued a forecast and warning for "thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, heavy rainfall and gutsy winds (50-60) at isolated places" for Mumbai and some adjoining areas.
According to Accuweather.com, there is a 90% possibility of rain in the evening with at least two hours of precipitation expected. The probability of thunderstorms is 68% with a cloud cover of 100%.
To add to that, on Tuesday, both Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians were forced to conclude their training session early at the Wankhede Stadium due to bad weather. While the two teams were slated to train from 6:00 PM IST to 9:00 PM IST, they were forced to call off their practice much earlier and the centre square along with fast bowlers' run-up areas were covered and floodlights turned off by 8:30 PM IST.
Mumbai Indians were the first team to leave the field while Delhi players stayed back doing light training but were eventually forced to call it off.
The BCCI also took a notice of current weather conditions across the country to announce an additional hour of play to be added to match timing from Tuesday, including the league stage which could mean that the matches may finish much later in the night.
“Similar to the playoffs stage, an additional one hour will be allocated to the playing conditions for the remaining matches of the league stage, starting Tuesday, 20th May,” the IPL said.
