Niki Prasad led India continued their dominant run in the ICC Women's U19 World Cup on Sunday as they inflicted a crushing 8-wicket defeat on Bangladesh in the Super Six clash at the Bayuemas Oval. The defending champions remain unbeaten in the tournament with four consecutive wins and will be hoping to emulate the feat achieved by Shafali Varma's side in the last edition of the tournament.
Asked to bat first, Bangladesh tried an aggressive approach against India but it backfired as they lost three quick wickets for just 9 runs. Indian pacers Joshitha VJ (1/6) and Shabnam Shakil (1/7) made most of the conditions in Kuala Lumpur, extracting bounce and movement from the pitch to trouble the Bangladesh batters.
Left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma took over after the early breakthroughs and proceeded to dismantle the Bangladesh middle order, taking 3 wickets for just 15 runs.
While a 31-run partnership for the sixth wicket between skipper Sumaiya Akhter and Jannatul Maoua gave the Indian captain some cause for concern, Sharma returned to dismiss Maoua (14) to see Bangladesh quickly collapse from 53/4 at one stage to a final score of 64/8 in their 20 overs.
In reply, opener Trisha Gongadi set the tone for the Indian innings with a blistering 40-run knock that included 8 boundaries at a strike rate of 129. After Gongadi's dismissal, Sanika Chalke (11 off 5) and captain Niki Prasad (5 off 2) took over and ensured there were no hiccups as India won the match in just 7.1 overs.
With their dominant run in the tournament so far, the Indian girls are likely to find a way into the semi-finals, which begin on 31 January, and if they are successful there, the final of the tournament will be played on 2 February.
